OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

The lady said on wheatens if thier chest is all cream color then it's a girl. If there is any black spots or blue on its chest it's a boy. As far as eggs, you will have to wait for another 14+/- weeks for them to lay eggs. I can't remember right off hand how old they are. When I get home, i will look for you.

I have 3 mixed breed kids I should be getting so eggs from in late August. The Marans I think end of September and the Wheatens not till October.

It's this big one of the mixed breed I'm thinking is a roo.

It looks like a pullet to me. But throw it out there for a more experience person to help you. Some birds mature faster then others.

Thanks! It's so nice to know you are close by! I'm in Concord. Was hoping to find pullets nearby too and haven't had any luck. Maybe by next spring I can get them from YOU lol!

Okay, I'll bite. How do you accidentally end up raising chickens??

I did it!!

I wanted ducks for my pond. My sister-in-law had extra drakes, so she brought 3 of hers to me........... along with 5 roosters!

(now I have 68 ducks and chickens, with 4 broodies on eggs and more on the way for my incubator!)

Welcome, @WVduckchick ! I knew you weren't that far off from OH.

My rooster stays away from us all else my kids get to close then they get flogged . He has been good for a while so he was allowed to stay. But then I have other roosters that are the sweetest thing.

The first one we had was a mean SOB. Biting, attacking, flogging. We gave him away and rejoiced when he left. The polish is better but in general the chickens don't like my husband. I can walk in the pen and they all back off, even the rooster. I can pick up the new babies (which they don't like of course) but the mom does not bite.

However if I pick up one of the girls the rooster does get agitated. He hasn't ever attacked me but has rushed the door once. That could just be because it was the coop door and he was protecting his house. I just shut the door on his face.

You see, it all starts with a fluffy little ball that supposedly doesn't require much to take care of. You think all it needs is food, water, shelter. Then it needs a play pen, a house, some friends, a fence, some more friends.... Now all the friends don't fit in the house so you need to build another one. Then it needs a pen and a fence. BUT WAIT. You still have more room in that second house. Your chickens need more friends!!

I'd say I started with chickens on accident. I had an empty coop and someone had 4 girls that needed a home. I agreed to take them in. I knew they were older but thought it would be a good start to see if chickens were a good idea. I brought them home 3 days later. Less then a week after that I guess word got out and someone else had 2 more girls in need. So I had 6 girls for the last year.

Then chicken math got me....I wanted 4-6 more...I got 9.
