OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Well, I have bad news and good news, Marengoite -- and they're both the same news: I won't have any chicks for sale before next fall. I'm just learning them myself, and won't sell chicks until I've hatched out and raised a generation myself first to make sure I'm happy with the results.

4H chicken mom, thanks so much! I've got them posted there now, too :)

Ketcham, yep! Mine just hunkered in the coop for three days and showed absolutely zero interest in going out, lol! I don't blame them. It was yucky!

That's good news and good news. I need more chicken breeds like I need a hole in the head.

LOL.

But do keep us posted on how they turn out. I may succumb to chicken math about the time you have some ready to go.

I've been having a hard time finding organic feed, too - especially that's not insanely priced. I use T&C mash and supplement with home-grown corn, veggies and sunflower seeds. As far as organic breeders -- I know you won't get "organic" birds from the hatcheries, so your best bet is a local breeder. I'll keep an ear out for who's raising Orps in the area!

Anybody else know??
We make the drive to Maysville Elevator a few times a year and buy large quantities of organic feed so that we don't have to make the drive too often. I know organic is special order and way too expensive at stores around Medina. The drive is worth the savings if we only go every 4 months or so. I know there's a farm in NE Ohio that makes their own organic feed. We started out buying from them, but did not have good results and will never do that again.

Thank you, kmenchicks! I knew there was a feed mill somewhere in the area -- I just never knew where or what the business name was. Just googled it, and I'll be doing a feed run to stock up sometime soon. Thank you again -- VERY useful to know!

And Marengoite, I'll post brag pictures as they grow! :)

Western Reserve in Middlefield carries organic feed, and so does TSC in Chardon. :)

How do I add a siggie?? I can't seem to find the option in the profile page... is it elsewhere and I just don't see it?

Wondering if I was a bit foolish to start my chicks now. Seems most start them in the spring but I figured I would get through one winter while they aren't laying and get my eggs starting in the spring. Any input??

It is a little trickier to brood them in the winter, but I like doing it that way too.

I agree...its fun to have some chickies in the house while it's dark and snowy outside! Also, by the time they are ready for the coop they are almost ready to lay.
