Congratulations!

OMG!!! We got the 2013 Meyer Hatchery catalog and my son saw the Blue Ameraucana and want's one NOW.  I tried to explain that hatcheries don't start hatching again until March.  Anyways, does anyone here have any for sale or trade?  Preferable laying.  We have Black Austrolorps and Golden Comets to trade or that Buff Laced Polish Rooster I posted a few post ago.  We also raise rabbits if that would be of interest.  Let me know.

Thanks

Gary

I could be mistaken but some hatcheries hatch almost year round. I hope to order my next batch of chicks to come in Febuary. My last batch (and my first) I got at the end of May. They are just now starting to lay as we head into winter so I'm sure not laying to their potencial. I saw Meyers had blue Americanas. They also had blue Orps I think. But they are asking $20 a piece. OUCH! I don't know if anyone here has ordered from Sandhill but they sell blue Americanas, blue Orps, and Blue Copper Marans for $5 or $6 a piece. They also have Delawares and Red, Light and Speckled Sussex as well as some others I think would be nice to have. (chicken math lol) The down side is that they are Straight run only and you have to order in units of 25. Anyone here ever order from them?

Hi All.

I am in the research and planning stage of chickens. I am going to start with just a few for eggs at first to see how it goes. I think it will be fine. I live in the Cincinnati area, sorta rural area. I know chickens are allowed here. Also plan on rabbits for food. I grew up in Kentucky on a small farn, so I know a bit about chickens. My concern is the winter here. Last year was mild, and I won't be getting the chicks till the spring. Will probably get a couple of pullets, but may get some chicks anyway. I will not be able to free range them. Nor do I want to. I want a coop and run. Nothing fancy at all. Chickens don't care about the decor, just the food and water and safety. :) I want to get ideas for a basic, functional coop and run. Our lot is flat, but tends to get waterlogged when it rains too much. Not sure what to do about that. Hubby wants a movable coop and run. I don't know. I am more in favor of a fixed one. Will not run power to it.

Just introducing myself and hoping for replies and input.

Thanks! Deb
Hi Deb. I live in Warren County about 15 mins or so from Kings Island. I haven't been able to free range my chickens either due to hawks. (Have taken 2 of my hens away from hawks in the past 2 weeks-they are both okay amazingly). I have never had so much trouble with hawks :( I have bantams and currently have a hen that just hatched some chicks about a month ago and have four 10 week olds under a heat lamp inside the coop. The south side of my coop is completely open 365 days a year. Only partially closed it once for one night last year when the temp got to 0 degrees and was very windy. I think as long as they are acclimated and fully feathered they really tolerate the cold much better than the heat. My coop is just one of those 12X20 wooden garden sheds with the gambrel roof. Hope that helps you. Best of luck

Hi, Deb,

Welcome to the group. Here are a couple pictures of a coop I made from a pallet and some scrap lumber and metal. It is heavy enough that it doesn't blow over in the weather but light enough for two people to move. If I were to make another one, I'd put the pop hole in the back and make the wall hinged so I could clean it out easier. Also, I'd raise the pallet up higher and use either thick dowels or scrap stair railing for perches.

This is the view through the pop hole to give you an idea of the interior layout.

This is the nesting box in use. Obviously a little deep. I could have made it half this deep and it would have been fine.

And this is the "after" picture.

This is where everyone roosts. Note how close they like being to the roof. Crazy chickens.

This is the view through the front. I don't have anything over this so they have plenty of ventilation up front, but no drafts, so they can stay warm.

And this is what the whole thing looks like from the side. My A-frame is in the background. Scroll up in this thread to see what the coops looked like right after I got them done. Was hoping to get everything painted before the winter set in, but too much stuff going on with school put that on the back burner.

A few questions for the list. As I mentioned I'm planning to add to my flock this comming year. My DH wants a Few Buckeyes. Why I asked and he says because they were bred in/for Ohio. DUH! lol. Anyhow other than the blue orps, blue americanas, blue copper marans I am looking at, I am also looking at Red Sussex, barred rocks and favorelles. First question: Can you put Favorelles in a mixed flock or is it better to keep them separate?
Question 2: Really want to add barred rocks but was hoping to find some blues. Anyone know where I could find them? Last Question: Anyone ever had red sussex? Looking for info to see if they would be a good addition to a mixed flock. Thanks for any info. :)

Oh Lord, DDNONIN2016. We lived in Blanchester for about 8 years. Now we are in Goshen. Talk about a small world!!!
