OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Quote: I am planning to start with about half a dozen. We want them for eggs and I for fun. So I should build in the fall and wait till spring to get them? I definitely want to have a coop and most of everything set up before getting chicks. I am a planner but also a bit impatient too.

I also want to make sure i am prepared for the winter for them. I know I definitely want some easter egg layers and friendly for sure. They will be loved and care for like pets. I am soon excited, and my kids are counting down the days till we can atlas start to actively plan and get ready.

Keep in mind Ohio is now a "closed State". No poultry in or out of state unless it is shipped directly to or from an NPIP certified person or company. You can still get birds from anyone WITHIN the state. Your closest commercial hatchery is gonna be Mt. Healthy. You might get some luck and be able to get something already started. There are also a lot of private folks in Ohio who are NPIP too.
If you get chicks right now, they wont likely lay til spring...
Craigslist might also help find something thats already started and local to you. Any kids that were in 4H and planned on raising poultry for fair will have to sell off their stuff, Ohio canceled ALL poultry shows, including fairs, as well as swaps and auctions.

Very sorry for your loss :( We used this as well, kept hawks out for sure. This winter most of the time the snow fell through but during heavy snow and especially ice it sagged down very heavily, had to beat it from the bottom with a broom and get snowed on and the ice oh man. We added a plastic roof to our run a couple weeks ago to help manage bedding and waste, the straw sure did stink after the spring thaw so we now have nice try sand.
I used this stuff on my last farm pens. I went out and cut old tree limbs that were dead, cut the ends that looked like rakes to an even height about one foot higher than the fence top, and put the branches all around to keep the net from sagging. Free and it works. Some would break, so thats why I used a few of these. This method also kept the raccoons from trying to deliberately "sag" the net to catch any chickens that stayed out all night.

If I can just throw something out there. If you usually put them in at night, you are likely going to get another lesson, this time probably from raccoons, that until you button them up tight at dark, each and every night this won't be your last occurrence of this type. I'm sure I'm not alone here, but has been many a time we have left things early, or run home at half time of school events to close coops. Hope this doesn't come off as preachy, just giving you a heads up.
I do! But thats because I got to old to continue breeding and showing my dogs. I converted the dog kennel and run. On nice days I open the kennel door and use x-pens to make a fenceline and let them range in our yard. It gives them about 1/2 an acre...

Briggadane,

Where is this info posted please? Has there been an addendum to what has already been mandated? I am going blind on my cell phone trying to find out. Lol.
TIA

The State issued the announcement on or about June 2 this year. It made local headlines as it affected thousands of Fair participants. I believe you can see the actual announcement at Ohio Dept of Agriculture. Also, Ohio NPIP office. They won't even do visits right now, so many folks are either expiring or unable to get tested. It's believed the rules will be rescinded around August, but no one knows for sure.
