I think I would love to go to a poultry swap and a show. Always seems I forget or have something else going on when they happen. :/ anyhow Out of my 6 pullets 4 are laying. The 4 that are squatting, I have seen 3 actually on the nests laying. I am getting 2 to 3 eggs a day most of the time. They are 28 weeks old. My EE and my SLW are not squatting or laying yet. Those that have started laying now seem more affectionate than before. There also seems to be a shift in the pecking order. The BA and the Golden Comet (my first ones to lay) now are at the top of the pecking order where they use to be at the bottom. The Cockoo Maran is still in the middle (also is laying) as is the BO. (also laying but haven't caught her on the nest yet) The SLW should be laying, nice big waddles and rose comb but no squatting or eggs. She use to be at the top but no more. The EE is low girl on the totem pole. Is there a corralation between egg laying and pecking order placement? And any thoughts on why the other 2 are not laying yet? Just wondering.

The Troy swap is a great place to go and check out all the different breeders and see what the birds look like close up. You need to go early Saturday tho to get any really good birds, the laying hens are usually spoken for within the first couple hours, unless they are older hens. You can get cool roosters all day long. I bought a black jersey giant rooster one year and he was the coolest roo. Unfortunately he gave his life saving his hens from a coyote that came out of the cornfield in the middle of the day last summer.

I'd love to have about 30 americauna hens ready to take up there and I currently have 9 standard barred cochins that are 13 weeks old, they'll be great size by then, and they aren't birds you usually see a lot of at the swaps.

I live in Preble county, east of Dayton. I can't wait to get winter over with so I can have some new babies in the brooder in the spring.

Here's a pic of our coop(s) we built additions on to our shed one side is for layers the other side for meat birds, and plenty of storage in the middle.

We went to the one in October but made the mistake of going Sunday instead of when it started on Satuday. They said most of the good stock was already sold or at another show that day in Greenville. We'll definitely be going on Saturday in April and maybe even bring some of our SPPRs to sell!

We were there Saturday morning, but there was not a great supply of HEALTHY birds. Most of the birds we saw were very sickly and scrawny or old. The Spring sale is a lot better, in my opinion.

Thanks!! They seem to be very happy in there. I was a bit worried they would be cold since they've been inside all their lives but they seem happy enough. I figure if they are walking around eating and drinking, they are fine. I won't be letting them out into the run for a week anyway so the snow shouldn't be a problem.
