Let my hen and her 8 chicks out in the run with the other hens. The chicks are 6 days old. One of the hens grabbed a chick by the leg. Mom went crazy and took the chicks back in the coop to their area behind chicken wire. The chick is ok but it was scarey! Will try again tomorrow if it stays warm.

Sounds like she's going to be a good Momma!

Hello fellow Buckeyes.... Have a question for ya.. Just Starting with chickens and I have six red sexlinked chicks around 5 weeks old now.. Give of them are growing by leaps and bounds but one is not?? Appears to be healthy but growing slow.. Even her wings are about half the size of the others.. Any help would be greatly appreciated....

We have the same thing going on with 2 of our Ameraucanas. They seem healthy, just not growing as fast as the others. I know Ameraucanas can range pretty widely in size tho. Unsure about red sexlinks. I'll definitely be watching to see the experienced chicken people weigh in on this tho.

I got the coop from a family in Mechanicsburg who was out of chickens and moving. Found it on the Champaign County Rummage Sale page on Facebook. It's still on the trailer at the moment! Need some extra help getting it off and into position and can't get the extra help til tomorrow evening. I'll post pics as soon as it's up. Not nearly as pretty as the one we got a couple of weeks ago but it can house a lot more and we'll fix it up to look nice. Got a good deal too!

Question do you give your chickens scratch all year round or only in the winter?
