OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Nothing like waking up at 3a.m. to hear your rooster raising holy heck about a raccoon climbing the outside of the coop. Crazy coon nice try but you can't get in!

Sometimes they don't need to get in. Have seen where coons (and raptors) can freak birds out and grab them when they bounce against a welded wire covered window, or top. Amazing the degree a coon can eat a bird through welded wire if the mesh is large enough to get a paw through.

Big Medicine thank you and yes I learned the hard way with a coon pulling a chick through a fence once. My coops are closed tight at night, no fence covered windows or vents, it's all hardware cloth and landscape timbers. Hope a raccoon never learns to open the doors.

Definitely hardware cloth covering everything! Keeps out rats, too. One another note, just had to go get a tetanus shot as the Devil himself (My white leghorn roo in my avatar) got me yesterday. *******! Freezer camp is tempting, but he is so good at watching over his girls, that I give him another stay of execution.

ToniTalley, owwww! Hope you can maybe work with him some to stop him from attacking you. My large and in charge roo gets picked up off the roost and held now and then. I also don't let him mate in front of me. So far it has worked for 1.5 yrs and my 7 month old LF Cochin knows Mom won't take crap from him either. My bantam male stays clear of me as well, he gets held from off the roost too. Much easier to catch them that way. We had one banty male we put down for aggressive actions, I couldn't rehome him knowing how he was. hated to do it but it had to be done for our safety and his. He was being beat up by my large roo and then would attack us when we would go to care for them. Sneaky lil bugger would come up behind you every time and spur the crap out of your leg. I hope you all the luck dealing with this. Oh and I have heard if you can put him alone for a day or two it may help too but I haven't tried that.

The little ******* is fine with the hubby, in fact steers clear of him. I usually can keep him at bay, as he knows when I am giving him the evil eye, but I got distracted and wasn't paying attention and he knew it! I will be wearing boots from now on, I just happened to have shorter pants on that day so he nailed the bare leg with his spur. Usually I have heavy jeans on and a robe over that, so he can attack and it barely leaves a bruise. He has been handled when younger, but this year we just haven't taken the time. All our chickens run from us, but are fairly easy to herd if we walk slowly behind them. When they are inside the coop or run, and we pick them up, they are nice and quiet. Except for the roo, he has to squall a bit first. Hubby knows how to tuck their head under their wing and make them go to sleep, lol. We do that to clip their wings.
