OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I am sorry,I am not clear. they have their own pond, go into stream and all together 3 gallson of water in thier house. how can they get cooked?

Could you clarify that? according to professionals at night most ducks go into a pen that does not need a pond inside the pen but to have ton of water feeder.

and I have two

.

Don't know to much about ducks,,,have a friend that does.Once you raise something,,it is hard to let go...I have had some bad roosters, they were tough on the flock,,ie they needed to go....as for the ducks..If you enjoy them,,,then you know the answer..Kevin

You are right Kevin. Even these hard mallards that will not go to the pen after traing them for 3 days, they insisted to stay out. They would not go near the pen even to eat so I keep feeding them water mellon and live womrs outside. I feel like I lost control on them when I gave away the lead older mallard in the flock.

I think we all run into the predator issue at some point, no matter HOW predator proof we think we are.
I didn't do any predator proofing the first 2 times I did this due to ignorance on my part. We didn't have computers the first 2 times. But after doing lots of reading on the computer I decided to try again. And from my past experience being horrified at what the predators did to my last 2 flocks I have taken precautions this time, using hardware cloth instead of chicken wire, and trapping and killing over 20 coon in my neighborhood. Burying the hardware cloth 6 inches under the run. Locking my girls in at night. Put a motion light up to alarm me if anything is lurking around the pen and coop! That is all the predator proofing I can afford right now. I want to add an electric fence and a baby monitor or web cam! LOL I know I am being over protective, but with good reasons! I live in the woods with many predators!

HI Diana, I did the same. I took every one's advise here and used hardware cloth. So far I caught 10 raccoons and now these mallards that won't go in the house is doing great.

I have not lost anything to predators yet. I dont think there is such a thing as being too over protective. Especially if you lost two entire flocks. Good luck this time around and hope it is a long endeavor.

Ovi...ducks are silly critters (as are some chickens) and tend to like to sleep out under the stars unless the weather is extremely bad. When it gets colder & they need the shelter, they will go inside at night. Don't worry. Your ducks know what they need & what they want. Just sit the food & water outside & let them enjoy the nice weather. I only have a couple of ducks (the younger ones mostly) who bother to go in their box at night. My Mallards & Calls prefer to sleep outside on the ground. My Runners are actually pretty good about going in at night as is the Pekin & Rouen, but those "wilder" breeds like their freedom.

All is well here except the humidity on my incubators...LOL I think they have been running too high lately due to people flooding my basement several times by not knowing how to put a washer hose back on & not being smart enuf to figure out that was the problem (I was not home any of the times they did this....grrrrr). Since my incubators are all in the basement, this was NOT a good thing & resulted in a lot of eggs NOT hatching.

Really looking for older birds (15-20 weeks). I am currently tempting fate with two roosters and one hen at about 17 weeks of age. I fear if I do not expand their harem, and quickly, that I may have trouble in the very near future. "Why two roosters?", you ask. I'm INSANE. That's really the only explanation I can come up with. I love them both so much.
Are you near Celina, Ohio?
