OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Thanks for the input. I did a search and couldn't find a grain bin. I found a 'local' feed store in Toledo- and found out they do sell feed for chickens, but was unable to obtain pricing yet. I plan on 8 chickens. How long do you think a 'standard size' bag would last? I plan on letting them free range for a few hours in the afternoon as well!

ETA: 50lb layer crumbles is 19.99

I ended up with 9 wellies after having to cull two that were too sick, one who committed suicide, and getting dicked out of two by the seller during the whole first time chicken buying/swap fiasco

earlier this year. The rooster we took turned out to be a perfect gentleman and protector and beautiful. The hens that survived are beautiful and fat and fluffy. All of the chickens (except two) I got that were sick improved after a month of being in their new clean healthy environment and good care and were totally fine after two months. I went away from the experience with a lesson learned. We have had no problem with predators thanks to the awesome coop my DP built, and his unique method for deterring the hawks.
And today I got my first tiny egg (first egg ever!) from my OEGBs.

The wellies still aren't laying at 24+ weeks.

I am providing extra light in the morning now that it's autumn to make a 14 hour day for them. They have plenty of water and layer crumbles and they free range during the day. I've been saying "any day now" for the past month!!!

Though I got off to a rough start, the whole chicken experience is turning out ok. I'm feeling like I want more chickens!

I am in the greater Cincinnati area - I have't come up with anyone near me yet - since we are planning my husband and I are just doing research and planning.

We did buy the thegardencoop.com plans as my husband thought it would keep us sane, since we are doing this over time :)

If you like a great bird bred to perfection right here in Ohio, Check out the buckeyes. Here are a few resources for all the info you would ever want........http://americanbuckeyeclub.blogspot.com/....... http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/AmericanBuckeyeClub/ ........http://www.facebook.com/groups/buckeyechickens/.......They are a beautiful bird who thrive in our ohio weather patterns, and They are a great dual purpose chicken with wonderful tasting eggs and quality meat. There are plenty of people in the breeder directory who could help you find hatching eggs now or chicks in the spring. Good luck with your new adventure.

A typical hen will eat about .25 lbs per day. This will flucuate during the seasons and their ability to forage. $19.99 is way to much for feed.

Have you tried these feed stores:
Luckey Farmers Inc Lemoyne, OH
Masserants Feed and Grain Lambertville, MI
Sun Meadow Ranch Holland, OH
Countyline Co-op Pemberville, OH
IDA Farmers Co-op Ida, OH

I'm from all over Ohio. My Dad was a methodist minister so we lived all over Ohio when I was growing up.

I now live outside of Richwood, Ohio. I have 6 chickens right now. But Chicken math has me looking at how I can add more lol.

Ok! Buckeyes are definitely on my list to get this spring. I like their temperament and ability to handle the 'buckeye winters'.
We want a bit of variety also. Right now we are looking at 2 buckeyes + 2 others + 2 others. Any suggestions? We're thinking maybe some RI Reds or Wyandottes or ??

There are too many choices.

Calm quiet friendly layers for us.
