OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

My chickens are 25 weeks today. After weeks and weeks of checking the nesting boxes, sweet talking the girls then threatining to squeeze the eggs outta them I finally got an egg today!

It wasn't in the nesting box but at least it was in the coop. I imediately took a picture and sent it to my husband. Either I need a life or I got chicken fever.

So share in my insanitity as I pst a picture of our first egg.

That's wonderful!!! Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Hi I have a question regarding my Buckeyes. If anyone can shead some light that would be great! I have a hen and roster, not exactly sure how old they are but I am sure they where hatched this spring. They are cooped together. She isnt laying??? I have a set of Favorllies and Bramas who are about the same age and they both have laid and the Favorollies have had a chick too. Do Bucks just take longer to lay? or could there be something wrong?

Congrats, yours layed after 25 weekes?? I have some that where hatched this spring and they are still not laying... I took a picture of my 1st egg from my Favorollies too!!!

Yay for you!

Just embrace the chicken fever and run with it. My Hubs thought I was crazy at first, now he is as enamored with our flock as I am!

There are two things going on, possibly. Most Buckeyes don't start laying until they are at least 23-25 weeks old. So if your hen was born late in the spring, she may just now be coming of age to lay.

The second thing is that the days are now getting shorter and no one will want to lay, let alone a late season starter. You might want to connect a light to a timer to come on at 4:00 a.m. to make sure they are getting at least 14 hours of daylight or they won't start laying. Even then, they may not since the days are getting so short.

Finally, I'd recommend not getting worried until spring rolls around. You may have missed the laying cycle for this year's chicks and they aren't ready to get going yet. My hens have slowed way down the last couple weeks, even with the lights installed. Two of my hens recently finished their molt and the other 11 are hit or miss. This includes 2 Barred rocks, 4 Sliver Spangled Hamburgs, 1 Golden comet and 4 more Buckeyes besides the two that were molting.

Yay for you!

Well, my chicken fever just embraced buying about six dozen hatching eggs... Can you say "ack!"? LOL! On the other hand, I'm going to have a LOT of pretty breeds come spring!

Lol... Hubs thinks I'm crazy for the 10 birds in my basement! He would faint if I had more on the way! Heeheee.
You'll have to post pics of your multicolored chicks!

I'm so happy hubby brought home all the lumber for our coop though! So we are gonna have a busy weekend of building. :). My girl are now 5 weeks old... Guess they'll be in their new home in a few weeks!! Can't wait. They are starting to get a bit crazy in the basement box. They jump out as soon as I open the lid!

Up till about three weeks ago, I had twenty-seven six-week old chicks in my kitchen lol! (No basement, unfortunately -- it'd make things a LOT easier!) So you can tell the hubster it could be a lot worse

Yay on the new coop! I'm going to have a lot of building to do this spring, too -- eleven breeds, if I counted right :) Which means a bunch of little coops and one big one for my kitchen-egg flock. Okay, so mayyybe I got a little carried away!
