Hello! I have been a chicken owner for the past 2 years. We originally had 11 hens: 2 White Leghorns, 2 Black Australorps, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Easter Egger, 2 Barred Rocks and 1 Rhode Island Red. Pearl, one of our Barred Rocks died on the 4th of July at 5 months old. We later got a Black Copper Maran Rooster from a friend but he didn’t work out...eventually ravaging 2 hens from preferential over mating and he became very aggressive and I couldn’t enjoy my girls.
We recently got 6 more hens: 1 Lake shore Egger, 1 Green Queen, 1 Olive Egger, 1 Exchequer Leghorn, 1 Golden Laced Wyandot and 1 Delaware. The new girls are only 7 weeks old. My husband wanted ducks so we also have 1 Blue Swedish hen, 1 Buff hen, 1 Walsh Harlequin hen, 1 Mallard hen and 1 Mallard drake, also 7 weeks old.
I’m looking forward to watching them all grow and introduce the new hens to the existing flock. Duck eggs are going to be nice and I can’t wait to see all the new colors!
The crazy thing is now that we don’t have a rooster, I believe that 1 of our White Leghorns is growing spurs and she occasionally flogs us like a rooster and likes to torment me with her guarding behavior, but she is still laying eggs. Has this happened to anyone else? Looking forward to hearing from you all!
