I enjoyed talking to the folks I saw, but was already so worn out from all the excitement I felt brain dead.

It was great meeting you and Gretchen at the show!

I understand how you feel, and I was horrified to see him smoking as he judged! I mean, there's kids right there! When I first started, I wanted to call the SPCA. But, I have never heard of any birds being injured during judging, and, especially at a show like this, there are simply too many people watching. The judge does not want to get a bad reputation that will spread like wildfire through the fancy. I hardly ever watch while they judge my birds. I can't hear them, and they're not going to talk to me then. I did wish I had watched the cochins, though. Mine was in a row of four, and each of us was the only ones in those varieties, and there were no marks on any of the cards.

I've never seen a judge act this way. He really looked like he'd rather have his teeth pulled.

thats sad. I would have checked on that. Another reason I try and watch. I've had birds missed too:(

A judge doesn't typically mark the card of every bird. The cards get marked if the birds place or the judge has to make note of something on the bird, otherwise the card usually won't be marked.

I agree. But watching helps, because mistakes can happen.

Is there a way to find out who a seller was of a particular chicken I purchased at the show on Friday evening (paid Friday and picked up on Saturday). He had a BUNCH of sale cages right next to the exit door on the sale side... he was along the wall next to a stall that was selling wood carrier boxes. He had Polish, Gray Orpingtons, Brahmas and some others I cant recall now. He was the only seller along the bleachers side of the sale area. My problem is that my dark brahma which I purchased from him has some issues and I think he needs to be aware of it. I sure hope he didn't intentionally sell this chicken the way it was and I hope that if anyone else reading this purchased from him that you have you chicken checked out. I paid for my hen on Friday and picked her up on Saturday. I looked her over and she looked healthy and alert. On Saturday when I got her home and fed and watered her she began coughing and getting eye bubbles. I then moved her inside my house to isolate her completely from my chicken area and have been watching her. She would seem fine and then begin having issues every time she ate. Today I took her to my vet and found out she has three types of parasites... she has roundworms, cecal worms and gapeworms. My vet recommended I try to inform anyone else who may have purchased a chicken from this same seller. I'm highly upset over it and guess I'll consider it a lesson learned... I spend $40 on this girl at the show and then spent another $44 today for a vet. My vet also gave her a gentamicin injection (antibiotic) and gave her an oral dose of panacure wormer and sent me home with three more days of panacure dosages.

I realize that - one of my fav bantams didn't place in her class. But these were the only ones of their variety - mottled, frizzled, and blue. (Although there may have been another blue) I frequently get BV, even if I don't place - I know my orp pullets did. Again, they were the only ones in that variety. Oh, well, another lesson learned. Still a great time. Where was Tamara Staples located? I had brought my book with me for her to autograph. Does anyone know if she'll be at the Congress?

Wow! That's terrible! I'm glad you took her and got her diagnosed. I had the same thing happen to me when I bought a brahma that seemed pretty light for her age, but I didn't know any better. She should have been laying, but hadn't yet. Still, I wanted her. After a couple hundred dollars at the vet, I had her put to sleep. The necropsy showed she had an egg stuck inside, and she was dying of an inflamed liver, which was trying to compensate for the huge amounts of protein that the stuck egg was spilling into her. The seller may not have known exactly what the problem was, but he surely knew something was wrong. He charged me $30.

Still, it costs $89 just to walk into my vet's office, so $44 is a bargain. Good luck with her - at least those problems are curable, if not cheap.

Yes, my vet is great and doesn't overcharge. I consider myself lucky with that part. He charges $25 for an office visit and $15 for the fecal. The antibiotic shot only cost $3 and the wormer was an entire $1.40 total for four days. I just hate now that this poor girl is having to live in a dog crate for the next 7-14 days.
