Oil radiator heater

Well guys, I’m now terrified... remember how I said I am not pro heat and if you’re going to do it, do it well like @Acre4Me ’s beautiful example pic? Recall my post of bad heater and wiring trying to burn my mom’s shed/building thingie (I was using it as a example of what can be BAD)?

I go away for ONE overnight trip to town to pick up the doors for my house build, and what do I come home to? There’s somehow a light on inside the decrepit coop I keep saying should be torched (sans chickens!) for the good of the farm!!! Oh and the timer up in the rafters is broken, and it’s an outside light, and I think it has something to do with the multiple extension cords strung about the building like Christmas lights (oh, and over to the building my mom is staying in), some of which are indoor cords being used outside exposed to the rain! Oh they got it working alrighty... I don’t want to know how.

Please pray for the chickens involved... they don’t deserve this. (Oh and please remember... not my farm/coop/or chickens) I’m trying to make things better here, but I’m just the wife of the nephew of the farm manager, can’t be rocking the boat too much around here

Oh NO! I hope you, family and chickens are able to stay safe! So how much longer for your home to be built? Is there at least a countdown yet, or is it too far away (not enough done) for that yet? Is there anyway to swap exterior type extension cords for the indoor ones? At least you have us to vent to and its unlikely that anyone on your farm will be reading this!

Okay....let her have it her way. If it goes bad it will be on her. I heat mine and if something goes terribly wrong I will have no one to blame but MYSELF ~my husband said no too~he loves the chickens but not anywhere near as much as I do.
The only thing I’d worry about is chickens could perch on a heater like that. You’d need to cage it or something.

Thanks for being here! This is a great community, and I am so appreciative that I found it... I am aiming to be done the house by next summer, it is now just working with family, weather delays, and the bureaucracy of my municipality building inspections.

I have plans for an incubation and brooding room (maybe two, don’t tell my hubby that just yet!) inside the house, and can’t wait to start expanding and improving the chickens on the farm!

Nothing has burnt down in the past 50 years (I’m sure some of the wiring is that old as well!)... so fingers crossed and I’m going to go check out what has been rigged up in there tomorrow when it’s light out and I can see what’s going to zap me or whichever hapless chicken decides to investigate the newly glowing thing in thei

Good Luck to you, and at least there appears to be an end in sight that includes safe wiring. Given the situation, you are at least aware and are keeping tabs on what you can. Of course, with multiple people having their hand in the mix, some of whom may be very used to what they are used to (and nothing has burnt down yet), you have a challenge.

Good luck to you Kris. I've been in situations similar where relatives are such "experts" that they won't acknowledge there are smarter ways to do things. Stay safe and keep a fire extinguisher or two handy.

He was wise... I’m just biased because it’s to my benefit!

Well, I can’t discourage the extension cord lighting nightmare in the farm coop here, so I’ve added weathersealing covers (like the Christmas light ones but bigger) on the cord joints... yes there are multiple cords. Bought a new timer that at least is functional, and secured the cords with little cord holding screw in thingies so they aren’t draped all over loosely. Can’t do much about the cord being plugged into an exposed outlet and looped across between the buildings but... the little cord holing brackets are my compromise on all the inappropriate extension cord useage around here!
