I had an extensive pasty butt cleaning this afternoon and a 5-day chick got pretty covered in oil and water in the process (I heard oil stops the poop from sticking on feathers). However, since the process took so long a lot of oil got on the chick. I'm anxious that it is not drying off. I have it a bit warmer in the brooder (95) since her butt is bare looking. Thoughts?

Hmm, not sure if oil is an issue (compared to trying to get it off)... you could use something like Dawn dish soap and warm water to get the oil off, but I don't know if it's so necessary that you'd want to put the chick through that.

Also there's a very likely correlation between higher brooder temperatures and pasty butt - in your attempt to keep her warmer, you may be accidentally prolonging it or making it worse.

Thank you. She was the only one with the condition. I have the lamp really high up but I will have to adjust it again. She is doing okay now, thank you.

I had to clean her again today, but poops look good.

She has a bit of a crackle in her breathing. I've been feeding her yogurt to help her digestive system (I hear it and moist feed helps) so I'm hoping it is just a bit mucusy from yogurt in her nares or something little. I'll stop feeding it to her.
