Ok, about a month ago I thought a chicken got hurt and was limping...

Right now have an EE who was on death's door months ago. I brought her in and gave her Penicillin shots {that's all I had left to try}. She got better and was eating and drinking, and was put in with some docile chickens. It wasn't Marek's symptoms . She put her head in a corner of the coop and stayed there. I don't know why she was sick. But she got better. Now, she is skinny with food in her crop, and sleeping quite a bit. I don't think she's going to make it. And I'm going to have to say most likely Marek's, and wasting. Two days ago I saw her eating, well, pretending to eat, mostly just moving the crumbles around.

It's a sad thing.
This is what I went through this past summer Seminole. Same symptoms and actions. There were also ones that had the occular changes and then there were those that showed the classic leg forward and back. I had hoped what happened to me was a singular experience. This is so not encouraging. I have lost a couple since the colder weather has come. Fine one minute, dead the next. No clue.

Well I went up this morning and the chick that has been doing the worst of the 2 was in fact laying there with one leg forward and one leg back...so I guess that decides that then. We are going to cull these 2, hopefully this weekend while the older children are gone. My son was especially attached to the little roo that is not doing too badly...He will come and chatter at you and sit on your shoes, and loves pettings in a way none of the other chickens do...but I talked to my son about it yesterday, and he said he would rather it be dead than up there suffering, so he went up and gave his farewell cuddles before he left to go to his grandparents for the weekend. Poor little chickens.
I am sorry. I know what you are going through and truely wish you were not. The ones that are the most loving are the ones you will lose, at least in my experience. They can make it longer on antibiotics and special care but I always wondered if they were in pain. I think you are making the right choice with the culling. It's an awful choice to make but it's much better than watching them suffer further down the line.

Well thank you. I'm not looking forward to culling them, but I know it is the right thing to do. Now I just have to do it.

Miss, I know that if you have animals you have to be responsible for them, and it includes euthanizing. I can do some, but others I can't do, and my original girls will be going to the vet when the time comes. There are times that I can't do it at all. It's just never easy. But , when I have to, each one gets a funeral and a prayer. And I have to hold on to the fact that no matter how long their life, it was a good one. Roosters included.

Haunted, it's a good thing that we are a part of a group on BYC that freely discuss and bring our experiences here. I think you and I appreciate the opportunity to share those experiences to help others.

Our Freaking well pump went out yesterday...so we haven't had any water for 2 days...I am literally about to lose my mind...!

Well we found one used pretty cheap...so we're going to come get it...hopeuflly I can take a shower tomorrow, and wash some dishes, and do some laundry...we are 4 adults and 3 kids...so 2 days without water and we are starting to look like a third world over here...we have more dishes dirty than we have sink to put them...

That's what we did when our booster pump went out, found one cheap on ebay, but if the well pump goes out, I think the pump/crane company has to come out because its like 150 feet down, I think.

that you get water, soon!

Well we actually have a spring fed reservoir, so you can just reach in and grab it out...so that isn't a big deal, our reservoir is only 600 gallons, but it has a constant overflow. It is easy to pull and replace, but now my husband is messing with everything and trying to see what else the issue could be, even though it is now time to go get the used pump we were going to buy...he is making me crazy, and if we don't get water soon I am leaving.

That is so true. If it weren't for you and others like you last Summer and Fall, I would have gone right out of my mind. It just saddens me that someone else is seeing the exact same symptoms. I had so hoped that what happened here was a freak thing.

I too am serioulsy thing about culling a bunch of the birds from last Spring. The JG are half the size they should be and the Speckled Sussex are as well. The males for the most part have grown and filled out nicely. I may just put up another house for them and call it good. They're happy, the females are laying, even though the eggs aren't much bigger than the ones coming from my show girls and silkie. My control group was hatched from these eggs, so I know they are fertile, just small. It's funny, the Dark Cornish that made it through, are not affected. They are full size and very prolific. I don[t get this. Why weren't they affected the same as the other birds? It almost appears they have some kind of immunity or something. Maybe what I shouod do is breed them to all the others and see if whatever it is will come through.
