Gable style is the obvious favorite. What style is your house? Do you have a shed already that the coop will match? Is your land flat or hilly?

Make sure you check with zoning too. Most towns consider ANY structure a building
so be safe and limit any future hassles.

How much will the carpenter be charging you to build this?

I'd check zoning, but if you hire a carpenter, usually around here, they get any necessary permits. If a building is less than 100 sq ft, none necessary or if it costs less than $1000 to build and isn't wired for elec, no permit needed. That's here, of course, and laws vary all over.
If you were building it yourself, shed roof is easier, but since the professional is doing it, I'd go for the gable type. Seems less shed-like and more home-like.

Gable is cute and house-like, but I made both of my coops with a shed roof so I'd only have to put up half as many gutters. It may seem a bit extreme to have gutters on a chicken coop, but one too many drips down the back of your neck while checking on the birds and you'll be glad you put them up.

LOL, are you kidding? I don't even have gutters on my house! I do hate those back-of-the-neck drips, though. A plastic piece as a diverter would do fine just over the doorway, though, rather than entire gutters.

You can do a gutter for around $25 on a coop that size. Home Depot
has everything you need.

Our first coop didn't have them and boy did that "water down the back"
feel bad.

Speckled, I haven't done the gutters on my house yet - On the honey do list.

just go buy a 4x6 rubbermaid building at lowes and a 8x12 dog kennel hookem together. i was gona build but heck it wasnt but about 200 dollars for both . cheapest way for me.

if the gable style matches your house, that'd be my pick! you could trick out the paint to match your house! cute!

i didn't look enough before we built our coop. i have coop-builders' remorse!!!

I like the shed style more for chickens. Gable type seems more for human dwelling. Just my opinion on those two.

But what I really like best for poultry is the 'combination' type....also known as the 2/3rds, or saltbox type. Check this style out and see what you think...

Good luck,
spot
