This is my first time with hatching eggs, and I think I have some that developed, but not quite sure. I candled with a flashlite and my hand cupped around the eggs, so this wasn't rocket science by any means

What I saw in a few of them was just the air sac, and the rest was solid black - I'm assuming that would be the chick, or could it be something else? Like a rotten egg? One was sloshy, so I know that is no good Clear through and through. These poor eggs had a rough trip here... Out of 12 only 8 made it in tact. Could that mean that they might be delayed in hatching due to the rough ride, if they hatch at all? Lastly, when I was candling the eggs, should anything have moved, or is there not enough room for rowdiness

I know when my mares get close to foaling there isn't much movement out of the foal because of space issues, so I'm assuming it would be the same way for a chick... Keep your fingers crossed for me and my little broody! If any hatch they will be frizzle EE's!!!

Awww, what a good broody Mama! Is she a Jersey Giant, or an Austrolorp? She sure looks determined!

Right before hatching you might hear chirps coming from the eggs, and you might also hear your hen softly clucking back to them. I think those solid eggs you viewed are full of chick, and too cramped to move. I don't know about setting shipped eggs, but give them 22-23 days before calling it quits.

But I hope you get 7 nice frizzled EEs!

i would put something"fencing/grate" in front so that any chicks that hatch can not fall out of the nest, other than that all you can do is wait, mom probably wont try to leave nest for couple days to allow all to hatch. They can last a couple days without food/water, so dont worry about that.

Thank you! That's great news... I'm SO impatient

Momma is an australorp that I got, along with 3 others, from "HinkJC" a little while back. They are such nice hens, and they lay very well for me

I will be moving her as soon as they hatch, but in the mean time, I will block the opening... Thanks for the advice!

Oh gosh, I have an australorp who is sitting...this is day 20 and I just discovered she has hatched the first one during the night. You are gonna be so excited when you discover some chicks under you hen for the first time!! Happy hatching!!
