This is my chicken, Oprah. She is my most beautiful, loving, calm, cuddly, gentle girl and I have had her since before she hatched in August 2012.

I keep the coop and run very clean, change bedding, dust bedding, dust chickens as needed, sprayed each of their vents and wingpits with Permectrin II because you can and because you should if you have had poultry mites (which we had last year) but I have never seen one since. I have inspected all of my 16 hens and am unable to see anything however, they are losing feathers on their heads and necks which I chalked up to picking and pecking when finding their favorite places on the perch at night. I am at a loss and I need to get something to treat them. My babygirl looks so uncomfortable and it seems like she can't see well out of her left and better on her right because that is the way she turns especially when I feed her. She is also my broody girl and she is in the middle of raising babies right now. All of my other hens and all the babies have beautiful, clear eyes, beak, nostrils, no snot, no runny anything, all poops look great. The babies all have skin and feathers coming in just fine, nothing missing. None of my birds are scratching or itching. I am at a loss so asking for help from all of you who've had experience and perhaps know what this is and how to treat it. Please see my 3 pic links below.
Thank you,
Amanda

Here she is now, my heart.

Has her iris turned gray?
Nope. The color is still beautiful. Sometimes the other lid will cover her eye and I know they can still see through that because of the cones which is very cool but seriously, I am completely stumped and very concerned for my girl.

Have you added chickens to your flock within the last 30 days?
To me, she has swelling around the eye, maybe a little pus or watery/bubbly discharge(?) Have you treated her eyes with anything (flushing with saline, eye ointment, etc.)?

If you have vet care that can perform some testing, that is best.

General eye care is to flush with saline and use an eye ointment like Terramycin.

I have indeed added 3 new babies now 16 weeks old today and then recently, I gave her 7 day olds because she was broody. Her eye problems were well before that and because I did not take my own advice and go with my instincts, I listened to my husband instead as he convinced me I was too uptight and looney about my animals and that nothing was wrong with her or her eyes. Today before posting I went back to see other pics I had of her and found really good "befores" so I posted those for all of you in Hope's of receiving help for her. I have not treated with anything because I did not know what to use or what it might be. It does look bubbly but it is dry and I have never seen any ooze, water, blood, puss, flies, parasites, mites near her. The only thing I know for certain is to always trust my gut no matter who is telling me otherwise.

Yes, it does to me too. Could be a cataract that accounts for the color(?) Hen is approx. 7yrs old.

I think possibly, you're referring to her nictitating membrane or more commonly called the third eyelid. It does look like a cataract. I see it come and go and they can actually see through that. They have en extra cone and have "tetra" vision. Short word. Their eyes are fascinating.

O.K. so you just happened to catch that while taking photos.

The eyes still look swollen and possibly have a discharge. Have you been treating her with anything?
