I posted as a new member here from Portugal.. 2 days ago..my muscovie female abandoned a certain wrong timed nest in a storm 25 days ago . Eggs were soaked she abandoned the lot out of 11 ..5 were OK my crazy chicken psycho stole the ducks eggs for 5 days ..i knew the humidity would be wrong...so taking them for dead candled them 5 good and still moving ...basically I had no idea what day we were on I am used to bantams..so guesswork came in with lockdown ..I had one muscovy egg pip internally ..24 hrs later I made a safety hole..3 days later the chick was still moving but no progress...o don't like to intervene but felt I had to at this point..I'd grabbed the eggs after a storm and a chicken trying to hatch them..I put them in an incubator and had a 7 hr power cut with the next storm and stuffed all 5 eggs down my bra and wrapped myself I'm a duvet for 7 hrs to keep them warm ..no way was I going to let this go now..so 4 days of internal membrane pipped a safety hole and then panicking I read and watched a video on assisted hatch ...everything I read said make a safety hole but nothing for 4 days later and what to do ..so o opened more if the air cell ...there was no aircell the duckling was enormous maybe 2ml of space ..membrane was papery white . Duck was trapped..so I opened more according to the video. Shone a torch then to my horror was a large yolk sac...i read more watched more . I put the little duckling with it shell intact at the bottom
.wrapped it in clean paper towels..and used a zip lock bag and secured it around the bottom half if the duckling ..then I put it in a tea cup upright for 24 hrs ...o got up countless times in the night my poor baby..weak and lethargic..7am this morning I woke to check..itcwas still alive . But weak . I opened up the bag . Shone a torch still a small yolk ..I put it back in the incubator..high humidity as have 4 more duck eggs in there checked at mid day..all the yolk had gone so I carefully helped the baby out the shell . Bit it was still attached by a thick membrane. So I used a hairdryer to pull gently on the egg and heat the umbilical cord until such point it dried and came off without blood..The babywas very weak . And half if it still wet ..so I tried it on some sugar water as was worried ..with the humidity it took some sips I then put it back in the incubator for 4 more hours it was fairly dry I checked the lump that was left which was huge but no yolk . And now it has gone totally ..in portugal we have different cleansers..so I used betadine diluted 1 drop to 10 water to cleanse the umbilical area . All has disappeared...baby moves around but is weak. Firstly I'm a newbie I understand bantams inside out..I lost a whole hatch of musvovies before and said I'd never do it again what I have been through has tested my knowledge to the limit om a firm believer in nature take its course but after loosing11 perfectly formed muscovy which are notoriously difficult to incubate..the storm made me change my mind . The first baby...even though struggling and I intervened maybe a little early but 4 days through the internal mbrane there is no information on this anywhere on the net .. the video helped me immensely..energency hatching ....patience ..good hygiene practice all helped me ...baby is not out the woods...but full egg sac. To being absorbed ...in 24 hrs ..keeping the baby upright in an incubator shrinkwrapped in a plastic bag it saved my little baby for now ...lump left after egg sac absorbed has now disappeared as a precaution wiped with betadine
.wish me luck. I have done everything in my power to try and save these guys ..4moreleft ..
Long story short ..baby is now put the incubator..the large mass after egg sac absorption has gone and used betadine diluted to clean and dry with warm hairdryer ..sorry I'm not conventional..desperately need help on here so winged it guys ...many apologies x
