Ok so how mad would you be if ?

Actually I expect them to go in order of your order date. Anyone who ordered after I did, should come after my order is fixed. If hatch wasn't good then maybe they should be the ones waiting a few extra weeks not me waiting months. Especially seeing as they deal with several hatcheries, "they all can't have bad hatches at the same time". Seems only fair to me, don't you think?

Yes I would be upset. Money doesn't grow on trees as we all know, and getting a bunch if random breeds that you never wanted to begin with just wouldn't be acceptable to me. Large hatcheries have the means to fill orders better than small home breeders and if you didn't ok second choices, they should have apologized, offered a refund or asked if you would like to be placed at the TOP of a waiting list for the next hatch. I only offer what I know for sure that I have!
To the person who mentioned only buying locally...its not always likely that anyone near you has the breed you want so that's when hatching eggs and chick orders come into play. Personally, I'd rather have my money back than breeds I don't want.

I'd be mad, too - I ordered turkey poults 2 months ago and just got a call this a.m. that it'll be another month. "The hens aren't laying." I know that's out of anyone's control but now I'm scrambling trying to find some. Time is of the essence!!

I think the simple fix is buy real chickens from real breeders in your area

Not that simple for all of us. I have to agree with MofarmGirl:
...its not always likely that anyone near you has the breed you want

My definition of my area would be about a 50 mile radius. Since I'm 6 miles from Canada, that limits my radius considerably. Nearest certified hatchery to me is about 200 miles away and even if I was willing to make that drive just for peeps, it doesn't mean I'd get what I want in one try.

Ghost Rider: I would expect them to honor my order by date also. I would be SO upset to have such a FUBAR order.

I used Cackle Hatchery and I authorized them to sub, but told them the priority of which breed I wanted the most and asked that they shipped accordingly.
They sub'd without letting me know, and I'm so new at this I didn't even realize it for almost a week (DOH!), but at least the subs were all the same breed and healthy, and all birds came at once and alive and I'm very happy with my order.

IMHO!: In your place, I would tell the hatchery to just refund my money or get their business blasted on BYC

.
And I would find another hatchery. If you already have to wait, why wait for someone you don't trust?

I'm quite sure these peeps have lowered my blood pressure by several beats. If someone were ruining that for me, I'd wipe my hands of them RAGHT NAA-oow!

Good luck with this

Ghost Rider, if your in Wisconsin, I can get you a breeder for nearly half the reconized breeds within probably 50, but for sure 100 miles. Remember, that ordering rare breeds that you cant find an experienced breeder for will probably end up getting you birds that look far from what they are supposed to anyway.

I agree with the post about buying from people you know, but they dont always have what you want either. I have ordered baby chicks two times from a hatchery, i will say their name it was ideal poultry. The first order was messed up and i had 5 dead babies and of course i was peeed, but i called these folks and explained to them and they were very polite and by next hatch they made it right. This was my experience, i would recommend ideal to anyone because they were very professional about it. I try to deal with local even tractor supply deals some chicks in the spring, got some real nice gold comets from them, but most of these dont know much about chicks. Its a risk in almost all things you do in dealing with birds but its very rewarding when it goes right. God bless.

The difference between a good hatchery and a bad hatchery is how they do business. I don't think anybody here would have serious issues with the difficulties of purchasing live animals if the hatchery provides good service and communication. A responsible hatchery would recognize the difficulties of dealing in live animals and would calculate a percentage of rotating inventory for replacements. A good company would also deal honestly with customers and keep them informed. Most communications can be automated with only special circumstances requiring more direct attention. If you have to replace a breed in an order, let the customer know and if you are giving the customer a chance to change the order, let them know how long they have to make the decision. Dealing in live animals is not easy, but good customer service is not that difficult and can make a world of difference.

I ordered from McMurray and had a great experience with them. It was my first time ordering. Everytime I needed someting (questions, adding to the order, changing things.......they probably had me marked as their most annoying customer

) I had to call. I sent them a few e-mails and got no response. But if I actually physically called them they acted like I was the most valuable cusomer they've ever had. So, perhaps, if you called your hatchery and raised a little

with a real, live person they might be a little more inclined to help you. Shoot- if I were only 40 miles from them and received an order like that, I would've driven there and taken care of it in person. Good luck, and so sorry about your poor babies

I'd be more than happy to have your help finding me some chicks for next year, any places you know of would be awsum you can pm me or mail me with names/phones or whatever you have. Everyone around here with chickens has a mixed flock that is mostly the same blood since they first had them, and I would like to try to keep mine diversified as much as possible, the reason I ordered so many different breeds, but I really like the speckled, mottled and slash chickens, so if that helps you any. I would be extremely ticked off! Buying through the mail is very expensive. There are certain breeds I really need to have. If I order it, I do expect it to be correct. 2 months is a long time to wait. It's not easy introducing new flock members to the flock.
