OK...Tetra Tint question....

That's interesting...I wonder if the Tetra Tints from TSC are like the amber variation? We'll have to wait and see

NYRIR, I think you are correct. Judging by the product discription and management guide, the Amber seems to be the only variety that's been "prepped" for North America. The dark spots that some Tractor Supply buyers have reported are clearly visible in the photograph. The Tetra seems to be very popular in Hungary and isn't a new line at all, well, maybe to the US. I stumbled across the genetics a couple months ago, I'll try to relocate the data and post here.

I doubt that Mt Healthy Hatchery will offer up much info as this seems to be a proprietary breed, heck, they may not even know what they have. This may be the introductory offering via Tetra Americana. It will be interesting to see if the breed catches on commercially (as this is Tetra's goal). I guess us backyard growers will have to prove it out before the big operations will make a go of it!

I'm not sure where the "Tint" is coming from though, might be a secondary breed of the Amber or perhaps we in the US just like a second name or syllable for our breeds LOL.

Centurion Poultry hatched the first large flock (50k+) in January 2010. Ironically their "Bovans" line resemble Tetras quite remarkably....

Wow,with this kind of research and info, you'll have to post more often!
And yes, maybe us "backyard folks" are the preliminary test subjects....little do they know....we love ALL chickens!!

I think the "Tint" is referring to egg color...at least that's what I assumed.

When I brought my one home I told my DH that I picked up a Tetra tint from TSC, he asked if it was a fish

the name Tetra stuck for her name then

LOL ...We have 3 of them...and one is particularly small. For that she has been dubbed "Teeny-Tiny Tetra Tint!"

Well yesterday I decided to give my group of chicks now 5 1/2 and 3 1/2 weeks old (the Tetra tint is 3 1/2 weeks), some treats. I had bought some mealworms from Petsmart, since my closest TSC is over 40 mins away and in the next state

. Well I went out to thier coop and put some of the mealworms on my hand, so they would associate me with the treats. And they all kept coming over and looking at them, but none were brave enough to take any. That was until my Tetra tint decided to try one. She happily gobbled it down! Then she decided she really liked them and every time I would hold one up she would run from wherever she was in the coop to the me to get one. Knocking over and running over anyone in her way! Such personality, I even had my DH come out to watch, telling him that I taught her her name

I think he believed me.
