I have a lot of LB and LB mixes. They're great birds, and they have a high hatchability rate, too.

Be prepared for lots of broodies when they grow up. LB's are dedicated brooders, and excellent moms. It carries over into a lot of the mixes, as well.

Oddly, my buff Brahmas and mixes don't show any inclination to brood at all. I've read some other folks' posts that they had the exact opposite happen, all the BB's were broody, not any of the LB's.

I candled today of the 23 remaining eggs one was cracked, I didn't candle before setting them, so down to 22. I see movement in 16 including the one I fixed with the candle wax before I set them. The 6 ???, 2 look like clears and the other 4 are very dark eggs and I can't see much of anything, will let them set for another 4/5 days and re-candle. So far I am happy!!!!!! Keep it up little chicks...grow,grow,grow!

That's awesome news. I hope that the clears start to darken. I've had a lot of late bloomers this summer. Maybe some of yours are just a little behind the rest.

My big girls (and boys) were bored today, so I gave them some leftover pasta. I've read somewhere that you can mix your wormer in with pasta. I'm using DE, since my husband wants our flock to be as organic as possible, but mixing it in with the feed makes it impossible for me to know that everyone got his or her dose. How do you guys administer wormer to your grown chickens?

All the chickens love cold pasta, as you can see by this picture of Eliza, our Light Sussex pullet. I've started cutting the spaghetti into smaller pieces to make it harder for the chickens to steal long strings from each other. Do you think the DE will be better distributed in the pasta if I mix it in when the pasta is still warm?

If you mix the DE in the feed at the rate of 2%, everybody will get the correct dose for their weight because of how much they'll eat. They can't OD on it, so extra wouldn't hurt a thing, if you want to add a little more.

Thanks, Dancingbear:

I'm learning so much every day reading posts on the BYC. It's a great help to have people who know give advice rather than getting wrong information from some kid at the feed store who's pulling answers out of thin air. I actually overheard two young employees at a store I won't name giggling about how gullible customers are.

Hey Everyone,

Day 14 for my hatch isn't until August 1st, but I've already started to remove some unfertilized eggs. I was prompted by a bad egg, a stinker, so I closed my eyes as I smelled each egg. The bad one was obvious.

When I candled it, I could see a micro-thin crack in the shell in the pointy end. It's one I missed when I originally candled the eggs before setting the hatch. I'm wondering if I created the crack when turning the eggs. I'm turning this group by hand.

I hope everyone is doing okay, and I'm thinking happy thoughts

for your egg babies to keep them wiggling. This last week or so is always the hardest part of the hatch for me. Let me know how everyone is doing!

Here we go!!! Bator on lockdown, eggs out of the turner laying on their sides. I see some wiggling going on......The wait is on

I'm jealous! I still have a few more days to go before I stop turning the eggs. Make sure you post pictures of your new babies once you get them into the brooder.
