I just finished setting my hatch. The postman delivered my stragglers around 8 a.m. today, so I let them come to room temperature, penciled notes on each egg, and in they went.
I've got Speckled Sussex, a couple Easter Eggers that came as an extra surprise with the SS eggs, a few Cream Brabanters, lots of Barnevelders, a few Gold Laced Cochins, and half a dozen Light Brahmas. It's just over thirty eggs, so my incubator is full. I'm going to hand turn these guys. It's my way of staying connected to this group as my last hatch for the season.
Since I set the eggs around noon, I'm not counting today as day one. August 1st is day 14, so I'll candle and discard clears and quitters. August 6th will be day 19, so I won't have to turn the eggs any more after that. Hatch day is expected to be Saturday, August 8th. Hopefully it will be an afternoon hatch. I have a tough time going to bed if my chicks are hatching and it's really late. I'm too old to stay up all night.
I read a great snake remedy today. A guy losing eggs to snakes put golf balls in the nest boxes. After two golf balls disappeared, no more eggs were lost. I'm going to try this.
Good luck to everyone who's setting or has set a hatch.
