Hi All,

So Wed. morning my daughter throws up...diarrhea...my son throws up Wed. afternoon....took them to Dr. says it's a stomach thing. Then my son starts diarrhea yesterday....wakes up this morning throws up again and diarrhea....I googled everything. Turning to you guys since no Dr.s open here in the sticks and not sick enought to clog up the ER. Worried that they might have gotten something from the chickens. Not always vigilant about having them wash there hads after holding the chicks...they hold them about 20 million times a day

Anyone else have any experience with "getting sick" from your chicks? Thanks so much for your help! P.S. Kids are 3 and 5 no fevers.

We haven't had any problems with our kids, 11 and 5 year old twins, in regards to sickness and the chickens. However, we just went through a nasty spell of vomiting and diarrhea for days, passing off from one person in our household to the next lasting about 36 hours for each person. All 5 of us got it over the course of a week. Good luck!!

Thanks

I hope it's just that...what got me worried is that it seems that my son got it twice within a 4 day period! Ahhh..so hard being a mommy to so many creatures

just instill the 'hold a chick, wash your hands' routine with them to help clear it up.

also, did your chicks come from a hatchery? i read that a few years ago there were a few hatcheries that had issues with chicks going out carrying salmonella. i don't think this is much of a problem anymore since it is required that hatcheries and their flocks get NPIP tested for stuff each year. but you would never know unless it was common with other who got chicks from the same place.

i have also been hearing that there is a bug going around at the moment around our area and Mass similar to what yours sounds like.

Sorry! My kids (1 and 4) are sick too, but the dr. checked them for bacterial infection and it's *just* a stomach virus. I honestly think the kids are less likely to get sick from the chicks than from the other kids they play with. Hope yours feel better soon.

Thanks everyone for your kind replies...makes me feel better! The chicks came from McMurray's and they had that certificate NPIP thing, so hopefully that means that their breeding stock was clear....Hoping it is just a stomach bug. The doctor that I took my daughter to last week didn't seem too concerned that it would be chick related, but the relapse got me thinking. Just another thing to worry over..lol. Thanks again, this site has been wonderful!

Well anything is possible, I would istil the washing after touching thing or put some of that gel stuff by the brooder so they can put that on after playing.

Probably a virus but I always mention my animals when my ds gets sick, this way they always know that it is a posibility although so far no dr has seemed concerned.

I would wash all the bedding and disinfect all the door knobs, phones, etc.. since the bug is spreading from one kid to the next. I once got really sick from a stuffed animal I had bought at a yard sale. got better then played with it again and got sick again. My mom finally figured out that it was the toy and washed and restuffed it and I got better and never got that illness again. Is there any new items you guys got last week?

I can't think of anything new. I cleaned the whole house yesterday, washed the bedding, new toothbrushes, disinfected as much as I could so the fumes wouldn't bother the chicks as they are currently housed in a 4x4 brooder in the playroom. I just told the kiddos no chicks today and I gave them some flora powder in their pedilyte since they can't have yogurt....lol in the words of Rosanne Rosannadanna "It's Always Something!"

Stomach bug has been bad here in Texas. My son's office has had people dropping like flies. When our children were small, it always spread like wildfire and we were all sick.
Hope they are feeling better soon and that you do not take it!
