OKAY--My husband is going to KILL ME! LOL Need cheap coop plans....

if you are looking for a cheap way of building a coop...for materials look on craigslist. We have gotten 85% of the materials we needed off craigslist. Some of it took work to get (like tearing down a garage) but it is worth it. Check craigslist under the free items, and under the materials area.

If you check out our photobucket there are a bunch of step by step pics of what we did, and we have only spent out of pocket a little under $100 on materials

Umm...I'll have to try that...unfortunately, the nearest Craigslist area is in Wenatchee, which is about 3 hours, round trip from where we are...and with our gas at $3.79/gallon

it doesn't even out to drive our 12mpg truck down to get materials there...but maybe I can post some wanted ads for excess lumber/plywood & see what happens? that's a good idea...

**Off to check your photobucket**

THANKS!

I am currently collecting wood from furniture companies right now. Try finding some pallets. Our local boating store gets motors in on some fairly large pallets that they just throw away. The wood is very nice! Try rounding up some pallets or better yet, try some of the saw mills that are all over Washington state! You should be able to get some rough cut lumber for a fairly good price. Another suggestion would be to try freecycle.org and see if you have a group in your area or nearby. You could post what you are looking for and maybe someone would have want you want. It's all free, so you can't get any cheaper than that! Good luck with it!

I think in the BYC coop photos area there is a picture of one built with pallets as the siding. Pretty clever reuse of something that you can usually get for free. What about Freecycle? Have any Freecycle groups in your area? Call some local building contractors in your area-- they throw away a ton of decent scrap including 2 x 4 pieces big enough for headers, TONS of chipboard scrap, and cabinets and windows from remodeling projects that you can usually get for free. We just built a big metal shop building (its going to be a sh-ouse since we're planning to live in it for a couple years before we build the real house) and we saved all the scrap from that. We also have a used building supply resale place here. Its pretty trashy but you can pick up some used house windows that are killer for a coop there for 10 each.

Good luck!

We can get free pallets usually from the lumber store. Every now & then, they will have a stack outside for free. We gather them up & use them for stacking our hay...I've never heard of "freecycle" I'll have to look into it. However, I'm in the middle of NO WHERE...so most likely, I will not have much luck. I'm 5 hours from Seattle, 7 from Vancouver, WA, 3 hours east of Spokane, 3 hours north of Yakima...Sighs...

THANK YOU! I'm going to check out that free cycle thing...sounds interesting....our window in our current coop came from my parents' 1923 house....and they have more.

So now I've at least got the roofing & another window...but I need some design ideas & some lumber.

Oh & since hubby is a school teacher, he'll have ALL summer to build it!
