Well you could do what I did. I talked my DH into 6 chicks initially. Well, I had full intentions of only getting six but when I got to TSC to pick them up I couldn't help but pick up 12!

Later that evening when we had been watching them for awhile my DH said, "Wait a minute! There is more than six in there. I thought you were only going to get six." I looked at him and said, " Well, that's all I was going to get but then I realized that if I wanted to have a good chance of getting some hens then I better get more. So, I got more!" That was the end of the discussion.

I had no idea chickens cost so much...

The cost is the reason I knew I'd have to get most of the stuff for free if I was gonna have chickens.

Oh, keep in mind that brahmas mature at a much slower rate than regular chickens, so your "girl" may take a long time to develop, and if it is earlier than say 1 yr old, and it has a red comb/wattles, it is probably a boy. We learned the hard way.

Chilisweet - HenDaddy posted a picture of Squidy on another post, she's gorgeous! I like the other pictures as well. Oh, thanks for the heads up about the brahmas... I'm ordering them from My Pet Chicken eventually and will be ordering all females so hopefully it won't be a problem. I haven't asked them if they guarantee their sexing though... maybe I should?

LilPeeps - Thanks for the red sex link pictures, they look exactly like I pictured the RIRs! Maybe I'll switch for one of those instead.

LoneCowboy - The red hens in your picture are red sex links right? What are the black ones - sex links or Australorpes or something else? Levi is beautiful! I'm assuming he's a blue something!

OH, I forgot, I asked him about switching one of the black stars for an australorpe and he said that was fine! So, I'll still have two black birds but they will be different breeds. Plus, if the star we get ends up looking like Squidy (oooo, I hope so!), I still have an all black one (I really like the solid black ones).

Yes, the blacks are Black sex-links. This is my production coop. I went down to local ranch store to get 20 red sex-links and they only had 11, so I ended up with 9 black sex-links to go with them. They still aren't as productive as the reds have been for weeks now. The blue roo Levi is a blue Ameracauna from Speckledhen's eggs. These are the very last ones after she sold her roo. Levi and his sister Lilly didn't get their beards like they were supposed too, (one of the reason Cyn got rid of the roo) Their black sister Hayden has a big bushy beard. I named her after the wolf girl from CSI Las Vegas.
