Okay what would you do with this pest

Relocate it far away.

.............Relocate to heaven... I hear there is a shortage of raccoons and wildlife officers up there....

People inept with a gun? I could introduce you to a few.

Shooting straight down into the ground. Fine unless you hit a rock pretty close to the surface. A friend's son had his knee blown out by a richochet so I am a bit touchy on the subject. He and his dad were experienced hunters.

I don't see any reason why you can't trap it, put it out at the street and let A/C take it. If they can see the chickens from the road, I'd think you have a problem with them anyway.......just sayin....from a LEO

As a matter of fact I have. If you didn't before, you can read my post again where it says "daugher of a trapper." I have had experience with them. The throat slitting was a last resort when multiple bullets and rocks to the head didn't work. Sometimes a trapper has to take that chance in order to cut down on suffering.

Around here animal control gives you phone numbers and price lists to several local gun shops. If the problem is wildlife, sometimes they even bring out their own shotgun to get rid of the problem varmint and the traps they use are NOT this cute little humane traps everyone seems to endorse. While I do not endorse drowning, it is an option that I am not adverse to if need be. Pump pellet guns or a sharpened stick will do the trick. The main thing is to not be woosy about it and get it done. When it comes to a coon, those little buggers can be absolutely vicious and if the only thing between me and it was a knife, I'm gonna find a big stick. Heck, even bludgeon the thing to death with a baseball bat.

Those that think that all forms of wildlife needs to be relocated or "given a new home" need to seriously reconsider their thought processes. It's cruel, it's torture, yadda yadda yadda. It is also a source of meat, both in the varmint and the varmint prey. I'm going to protect my meat and maybe get another meal in the process.

I know the laws in my area. I am breaking them by having chickens. Animal control was of no help. I will probably just drown it, when I catch it.

Be careful, I read where there is a distemper break-out among the Mississippi coons.

I understand. I'd be careful, too. But then, like I said before, I only use a pellet gun. It could ricochet too but without nearly the disastrous result he had. Just seems like anytime anyone suggests anything, someone is always screaming NO NO. Yes, we all know of people that are assumed to be inept with a gun. Sometimes they even are. But shooting into the ground isn't anything like the hazard of shooting with the neighbor's house as your backdrop. Other than the rare freak accident like you cite, it's generally recognized as safe to do so.

Here is the basic rules of safe and effective ways of dispatching trapped animals.

If it is in a regular jaw snap trap, club the animal.

If it is in a haveaheart trap drown it. There are many options for drowning, you could drown it in a creek, pond, bathtub, etc.
