***OKIES in the BYC III ***

She will do much better by picking 1 primary and 1 secondary for showing. Make sure they both really have her attention and are in different classes.
I don't know what she has as of now but 1 single comb and 1 rose comb would work best as they will not compete against each other until best of show.
June, don't teh serama show in All Other Single Comb Clean Leg, AOSCCL?

I don't think she has anything show quality right now. She does have a real nice looking blue wheaten Americauna roo, was the very first bird she ever hatched. Ordered the eggs off eBay. She has never expressed interest in having any others like him though! I have a few rir that may have show potential, they are still young but there color is nice. But those are my birds not hers.

I figure as far as show birds go we will be starting from scratch. Guess I need to show her the break down of which birds fall in what class & let her start narrowing her list so next fall she will be ready to make a few shows. I never know what she will like bird wise. Very unpredictable girl, how many others have kids that love guineas? Not your average child.

bring her up to Shawnee for the big show Dec. 10-11 there will be 5000+ birds on display, she can good examples of narly every breed and variety. It is easier than looking in a book and she will know what to look for in good stock. Have her discuss teh birds she likes most with breeders who will be there tending to thier birds.. You would be surprised how open these folks are to the youth and she may end up with some very good ones givven to her.

I agree! And the little quail have tons of their own personality, not like chickens mind you, but you can tell each one by its own traits. We have as much fun watching our quail as we do the antics from the other birds.

Jarvis we will try to make the Shawnee show. I am sure she will love it & be very excited to see all the birds. December can be a busy month sometimes. Lots of functions & activities, I will mark the calendar for the show.

Buster I do know the neighbors cause most of the fuss. Just cant understand where & why some of the codes come about. We don't get many letters for our rentals, just when the grass is high. The rentals are most in neighborhoods where neighbors mind there own business since they are all renting too. We didn't start getting letters on our house until a developer started building a bunch of homes in our neighborhood. Our house in town sits on a double corner lot & he wanted us to take our privacy fence and taper it down to allow a better view for the 2 places he was building behind us. I didn't want to be in my yard seeing the house behind us. We still own the house. He is finished building & sold the new houses so the letters stopped. Odd how that works.

Wow, my little pile of baby Silkies, baby Cochins and a few miscellaneous others hardly looks like any chickens at all compared to yours-thank you for that!

Serama are really small, too, and can be kept in a rabbit or guinea pig cage. Kept in a shed, garage (or even a bedroom) nobody knows they're there. And some of them have such tiny crows (usually the really small ones) that you can stand right by them and hardly recognize it as a crow.

I bought a pair of Seramas at the Newcastle auction a couple of weeks ago, and they are the sweetest little things. They've been staying in the house mostly, in a large wire cage. Their little miniature sounds are so funny! Just a few minutes ago the little hen sang the egg song, and it sounded so cute, and not nearly as loud as my large fowl songs. Even the little rooster's crow is quieter, MUCH quieter than a large fowl. This little Serama roo's crow sounds a lot like a Chihuahua's bark. I've fallen in love with these little critters, and would love to have even more!

They sold some full grown bird's at the sale sat night ...They only brot around 15 each an was as good as they come..They would have brot a lot more but they didnt wont to split thim up ten hen's an a roo ...

OMG... wish I'd have been there! That sounds like a much better deal than $115 for 12 eggs. I don't suppose you bought them, did you? Were they bantams or LF? I'm leaning toward LF, but I'd take bantams if I found them. Sooner or later I'm bound to run across some.

They wer LF Im not for sure who bot thim.... Newcastle sale is this sat .. An Pat Drew's auction friday night in Hairrah on the river bottum..

Oh my gosh LAWTON IS HORRIBLE.. I never seen such a town against their own.. Lawton should be one big ol gated community the way they treat the citizens... When we moved here back in March 06... someone called the city ordinance on my husbands vehicle.. mind you he was in the field and they said his vehicle was a junk vehicle..

Its because it was a Suzuki Samurai with BIG HUGE TIRES, Lifted and the fenders cut out.. go figure..

I was so hot . First off this is his daily driver and he is out on unit field exercises..

.. another time someone called to say we had a crap load of dogs and our yard was full of dog crap... I was like we have 2 puppies and the yard was clean... From there it just seemed that no matter what we tried to do in the yard.. someone was always calling on us.. ... Then we moved on post and did really good but we prefered to be home owners just always been our preference... Now we are in Elgin and it appears Elgin is making their way to doing the same thing.. Thank goodness we are leaving while we can... even though we will miss everyone

Neighborhood services always sent us nice letters too. From parking on the grass to having the trailer to close to the road. Always something fun in Lawton. Just think how much time & money they spend making sure you don't break any ordinances.

Disclaimer: I am not a City Council member of any community, just an ordinary citizen who has to abide by the same laws and ordinances as everyone else. I don't go around reporting my neighbors for every little infraction, but I will report certain things that need to be addressed.

All cities and towns have ordinances. Lawton is not unique in that. Some of the ordinances serve good purposes, such as not parking on the grass, or grass that is overgrown. These types of ordinances are there to ensure that neighborhoods don't get run-down and unkempt. Not only are both an eyesore, but overgrown grass or weeds attracts pests such as mice, rats, snakes and other unwanted critters. Parking on the grass just looks trashy, in my opinion. Both instances will devalue YOUR property along with the violator's and everyone else's within some distance. I have - and will continue to report both of those types of violations for the reasons stated.

Now, on the other side of the issue, there are many ordinances that are outdated or downright meaningless. The one that has ruffled my feathers in OKC is the no-chicken rule. Unless you own an acre or more, you cannot have chickens or other fowl. Even then, their enclosure cannot be closer than 100 feet to an adjoining neighbor. For the sake of preventing myself from getting banned from this forum, I won't go into detail about the OKC City Council's stance on this issue or the political agendas one or more Council Members have, but will state that there have been several attempts at changing that ordinance to no avail as of yet.

Then there are some folks who feel the need to look for reasons to report someone for every infraction. These kinds of people may have different reasons for doing so, but more often than not, the type of folks who habitually report violations do so just because they can. Just my rant for the day.

If you really want to assist in changing this Join the APA and ABA and get the 4H and FFA leaders and schools behind the poultry movement. The city council will be more likely to bend to youth based national organizations. The APA and ABA as well as national 4H and FFA leadership love to tackle things like this, they just need and excuse, a young person interested in the activity however is banned from ownership therefore cannot participate.

Hey Everybody!

First of all I am soooo glad tomorrow is Friday. I feel plum wore smooth (as my grandmother would say).

Second - Carl and Stephanie congrats on the newly hatch family member.

Next time tell mom to turn the thermostat down a bit to prevent early hatching.

sorry I just could not help my self.

Reading all the post of city ordinances makes me extremely grateful I live in the sticks. I have lived in town most of my life and only moved out to the country 6 years ago but the thought of moving back in town is just not an option anymore. Of course there are things I miss about living in town; decent internet service that does not cost a fortune, running to the convenience store at 2 in the morning for an icee, still having water when the electricity is off. You know, those old chestnuts. But the quite nights and being able to have a bunch of critters makes it worth it.

So, as it stands, I am planning on attending the festivities in Newcastle Saturday and wondering who else is considering partaking in this auspicious event. Sorry been reading a British novel this last week and the dictionary. Just practicing using all those 25 cent words I have learned. hehehe

Well I look forward in see a lot of my BYC friends at the auction. Hope everyone has a FABU Friday!

Per usual, J and I are opposite of everybody else. We're supposed to have an USMC Ball 2011 fundraising car & motorcycle wash at Ft. Thunder Harley Davidson on Saturday morning.

I'd rather go to the auction.
