I just assumed by the pics she was molting?

It looks like she's been the victim of an aggressive rooster.

wow, that rooster wouldn't last long if he did that to one of my girls!!!! I'm sooooo fortunate that my one and only boy is well behaved w/ us and his ladies.

Mornin' Okies. I still have this sinus infection crap but I've got to go to work anyway. Today's gonna be fun... barely got any sleep due to not being able to lay down. Blargh. I need more coffee.

It was nice to meet you too and wish we could have visited longer. yes im a sucker for the scout cookies too.. I got the trio settled in their own privite coop and they seem to love dusting . did you keep them im cages or on the ground.. worked on showing them how to drink from a nipple waterer.. they are all still a little spooked but im sure they will calm down in a few days.. Again thanks they are beautiful and i love the lacing..

The pullets and cockerel were in different pens until yesterday, but both have three floor surfaces. Inside the barn there's a 4 X 8 roost/nest area with wood chips on the floor. This is a deep litter area and will build up to somewhere between 12 and 18 inches deep before it needs to be cleaned out. I have an old wire cage positioned under the roost so that the poops fall there and the birds don't walk in them. This keeps the rest of the wood chip area a lot cleaner. From the nest area there's a guillotine door, kept closed at night to keep critters out, that leads to a 10 X 10 concrete slab, which is often covered with leaves, hay, grass, dirt, or whatever is available. It gets shoveled into the compost pile now and then. DH got me a power washer so I can clean everything quickly, disinfect, and then put down more leaves, hay, or dirt for the birds to scratch in. Off the end of the slab is a dirt area that serves three pens. Birds get let out for a few hours each day to bug hunt, dust bathe, or make faces at the birds in the other two pens. I had hoped to plant a few things for the birds to eat in the dirt area, but rabbits (the little magicians) got in and ate most of what was there, and then the grasshoppers got the rest. I guess it's okay about the grasshoppers, though, because the chickens managed to eat a lot of them this year.

Anyone know of anything fun to do in okc? Have to take wife up there for doc visit today and going to be there all day long and going to have some time to kill between visits. To bad there still isn't any chicken shows.

My favorite thing to do in OKC is eat & shop! We go at least twice a month, but I am usually doing stuff with the kids, froniter city, omni plex, waterpark, that kinda stuff. Myriad Gardens was nice this weekend.

We love to eat @ Pops on Route 66-- just outside of Edmond, if you are into sodas it is nice. They have a signature round barn root beer, DH is addicted to it, but they have over 500 other varieties in old fassion glass bottles. We usually buy a variety to bring home & try. Down the road they have a round barn you can tour, it is neat as well.

Also Bass Pro is a good stop. Sorry my mind is blank. I really don't do alot of grown up stuff in OKC except eat & shop. Maybe someone else knows of grownup stuff.

I am going to an Ag conference in OKC Friday, then will swing by whole foods to pick up some produce. Afterwards plan on going to Affair of the Heart Craft show.

I might try to make the Blanchard sale. It will depend on what all my girls want to do during Fall Break. The guinea eggs I bought @ Blanchard last month are scheduled to hatch this coming weekend. Then one more batch of chicks after that.

My poor chicken shed is going to be getting pretty full. I hatched this late so they would be laying come spring, but it is much easier to hatch in June- July. I was able to move birds out when they were 3 weeks old, since it was SO hot. Think as I am able to ID the boys, they are going to live seperate & stay on grower so they will be fat for the freezer.

I have a bantam rooster that we got from Donnie @ poops. He is just starting to get frisky with the ladies. I am wondering about rehoming him. He was raised with a couple dozen RIR that hatched in the spring. He is now chasing those poor girls everywhere. I saw him chase a pullet full circle around the outside of the barn today! As soon as one of the ladies squak my big RIR roo comes running to save them. Scared he is going to stress my birds or one of the big roos will take him out. He is an adorable little boy, but his hormones are getting him in trouble!!!! Not sure what kinda cross he is, he has 5 toes, and feathered legs. Maybe I can get a pic of him later.
