***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Except for tomatoes this is my best garden year in a very long time. I used to half heartedly attempt a garden, then stopped for several years while I was changing careers and going to school. Last year I did a ton of research and this year implemented it. It was the major reason for getting the chickens, the method I use involves the chickens in the garden. I have identified several "tweeks" I plan on implementing next year. But over all I am very happy w/ it this year, and proud I got it through the horrible drought still alive and bearing.

Chickens in the garden? I thought they'd eat the plants? As well as the bugs and such...

Very colorful and healthy looking veggies. You're doing something right! Next spring I hope to get my garden going in full swing again. I've have good luck with green beans (bush type) and white and yellow onions. Not so good with the red. I don't eat a lot of veggies, but okra is one of my favorites. Mine just didn't do well last year and didn't want to mess with it again this year. Yours look great!

Yes if they are in the garden when the veggies are and they can reach them they will eat them. I have a system of 8 chicken run/gardens per coop and rotate my chickens in and out of the diff runs depending on what is planted. They are only in the runs/gardens that are finished to clean, ferilize, weed, and do bug patrol before that area gets planted again. This is the first year, and I think the soil will only improve from here.

Ok that makes a ton more sense. I thought I was going nuts.

Thanks for explaining it for me!

Poor thing. I've seen birds at the auctions like that, too. For a dollar apiece I suppose you can't go wrong.

I just assumed by the pics she was molting?

Here's a photo from last year with some pullets checking out the green beans. They ate some bugs and tilled the ground around the plants but never really messed with the plants. They wouldn't go into the onion beds at all. .

It looks like she's been the victim of an aggressive rooster.
