***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Quote:
A while back there was a move to enact a bill which would require everyone who drove a tractor to get a commercial license to drive them on the road. While still in committee, the US Ag Department had committee members make farm visits. They soon realized it would be a horrendous task to monitor and backed off the bill.

As for Oklahoma's no retrieval law...We have replaced fences and have locks on all our gates because of an unscrupulous neighbor. If one of our cows/heifers etc show up on his land it will be because a lock has been cut. We then just have to contact the local sheriff and go with the sheriff deputy to identify our animal. We lobbied against this new bill for the reasons you listed. Good neighbors work with each other. If someone's animal were to get thru the fence to our property, I'd want that owner to come tell us and let us help get their animal home. A man next door to my MIL ran his truck over the barbwire fence so he could run his bull back home and then left the fence in a mess for us to have to repair. Also some "never farmed" elected officials have no idea what goes in to having livestock.

our thanks giving tradition is NO shopping the day after T day.....

Amen sister. No shopping for me. It has actually upset me that Wal-mart decided not to close for the holiday. It's bad enough that the decoration were out before Halloween this year. But now, they no longer give a crud if their employees have a holiday and are looking out for the almighty dollar. I'm not big on Christmas spirit anyway, lord knows, Wal-mart just took that away from me.
Sorry, just saying....

walmart! i say buy local as much as possible...
off to figure out how to cook this turkey- any suggestions?

We cook our turkey upside down. It isnt very pretty when it comes out of the oven but it is nice and moist. We cut into the skin and loosen it up, in several places. Then we stuff those places with garlic butter. Make sure to add PLENTY of garlic to your butter and mix it up real good. It has alway been great. And you never have to baste it, just wrap in foil but it in the oven and walk away. Of course we usually cook ours over night. Cook at about 350 to 375 for about 4 to 6 hours, then turn in down around 150 to 200 for the night.

Allbreeds - I, too, avoid big box retailers like the plaque. I would rather spend a little more for something at a locally owned business. I'm not into Christmas like some folks are, and detest the "make a buck" attitude of most retailers. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Christmas, just not all the hype, and especially the shoppers around this time of year. People go absolutely nuts and will literally run anyone over to get to something before anyone else. I do a lot my shopping online. Have for several years. There are just as good of deals there as there are in brick and mortar stores. It sure saves me a lot of headaches and aggravation.

On a lighter note:

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope everyone enjoys the day with their family and friends. Though some folks may be experiencing difficulties, we still have plenty to be thankful for. Personally, I will be giving thanks for my children and grandchildren, a roof over my head and food on the table. Or, as my x-mother-in-law used to say "A pot to pee in and a window to throw it out of." I'm actually grateful for a lot more than that.

Today I'll be baking in preparation for our dinner tomorrow. A day late, but no less thankful for all we've been blessed with.

You guys are awesome! I haven't been in a mall in probably twenty years. I boycotted Wal-mart for fifteen. Now the small town I live in only has Wal-mart and two small grocery stores. I do buy from those when it comes to my food. I do my Christmas shopping online and year round. I am usually done around July. Anything bought in Nov or Dec is just a seanal item.
