***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Robin - Galahad looks like one happy roo. Every time you post pictures I feel a little tug at my heart. I'm so happy he's part of your flock.

We nearly lost a rooster tonight. I had four roosters out free ranging tonight and didn't bother to put them into a pen because they had settled on the back porch. I figured they were safe there. DH and I were watching a movie, a rare happening, and we heard a commotion on the porch. I rushed outside, in my stocking feet and robe, and saw the backside of an enormous possum running headlong after a rooster. I ran while screaming, "Fly! Fly!" until I caught up with the pair. I picked up a five gallon bucket and whacked the critter with it and then tried to trap the varmint under the bucket. He was way too large, and I was only able to fit the bucket over his head and shoulders. He backed out quickly and then ran off into the west pasture. DH watched, stunned, and I'm still not sure what he thought about the misadventure because he's acting like he wasn't a witness. I'm going to check Facebook tomorrow to see how much he remembers (embellishes). All four roosters are tucked away safely in the pen they should have been put into at dusk. No more lazy me. I can't stand the thought of losing one because I was too tired to put them to bed properly.

MJ, I'd see if you could put the mama in the garage with the baby, too. How sad to have happen

Poco, you got close enough to try to hang a bucket on his head?? You realize those things are mean, right? I'd love to hear your husband's side of the story, too. My husband's version always sounds way different than mine also.

Quote:
Did that little Beagle kill that bobcat (is that what it is?)? My FIL in Nashoba has Beagles. And while I know they can be loud I also know what nice dogs they can be. They can sit on your lap for hours and be perfectly content. Macy lost a good dog and I really feel for her and the rest of you both.

My beautiful lavender showgirl hatched out three showgirl babes Thanksgiving day. She hatched two more SGs and one silkie the next day, and three silkies yesterday. I don't really know why she's taking so long to hatch her own babes, but they're all doing well. They are mostly partridges, but two are maybe porcelains; the dad is porcelain. I've taken them all into the house, which upsets her, but they're much safer inside. She's still working on two more, but I rather doubt they'll hatch. Of course, after the first day I didn't expect any more to hatch and they did. It is so sweet to listen to their conversations behind me as I'm on the computer!

MJ - when I want the chicks to stay with the mama hen, I fix up a cage with sufficient room for the mama to walk around some and keep the mama hen and chicks together in a cage. When I don't want to bring the chicks inside the house or set up a brooder - that works well for me.

Michael - it is apparent that Macy's dog was awesome. That cat looks much larger than the dog.

Poco - I can totally visualize you after that possum. One of my husband's favorite stories is the time I came rushing into the house, wearing muddy boots and with two of my favorite chickens in each hand, to tell him there was a large possum inside my chicken coop. I had shut the possum inside the coop and he had to "take care of" the very large possum - within a fairly confined area. His version of the story gets more silly each time he tells it.

That was back when I only had about a dozen chickens - a very long time ago.
