I like your stories, MJ. Good job pulling the lamb - glad to hear the second lamb got out without further stress.
I have a "euthanize a possum" story too: Back when I had horses I used to put the sweet feed, bag and all, in a plastic barrel. I went out to feed one night in the dark and there was a possum in the feed bag. When I reached way down into the almost empty bag of feed with the coffee can and I felt it, and it hissed at me, it scared me so badly I freaked out a little bit. The only weapon I had at hand was a curb bit...
So I thought my two little California Whites had quit laying for some reason - after two white eggs a day I have been getting no white eggs for this past week. The hens have been out free ranging and these two light-bodied girls like to hop the chain link fence and roam around the house. Several days this week I've taken Titus the Wonderpup outside the fence and asked him to search under some big bushes, behind brick piles, etc. hoping to find a cache of white eggs - all to no avail.
So yesterday afternoon, DBF Jack came over and was out in the back yard. Titus led him right to where I had a wheelbarrow leaned up against the garage and did his - "hey look!" face at Jack. I moved the wheelbarrow and there was a nest of 10 white eggs. Titus had to know they were there all along, but he waited until Jack came over to show off for him. I put all the eggs in water and none of them floated, so I say they're good.
