Robin to stop the bleeding on a broken feather you pluck what is remaining and then hold your finger on the spot where it came out for a short time. It will stop bleeding much faster that way. On the other matter all I can think of is that is either the membrane from a failed egg or the hen is shedding some lining in the intestinal tract. Ive been told that shedding lining every now and then is normal and most of the time the hen seem unaffected. But I would still keep a close watch on her for awhile to see if anything else pops up.
Robin do you have a set of scales like is used in the kitchen? It would be interesting what the birds weigh. As Carl has said a chicken builds internal fat first and if there is too much of it then it wreaks havoc on the internal organs, especially the heart, liver, and the reproductive system. With a hen it's important that all of her internal workings are allowed to be lined up for proper egg production. Excess fat puts everything out of line.
thanks Les, she seems fine now, but she is a big girl, how do i tell without a scale whether she is fat, she is coming out of a molt and soft and shiny? I noticed Muffy's shoulder this morning, the blood was dried, so maybe she hurt herself in the nite? i couldn't find a wound other than a broken feather that was coming in
