***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Let's see...a 100# pumpkin can yield between 60 to 75 quarts of canned pumpkin. You have to deduct the stem, skin and seeds as well as some of the seed sponge. Depending on variety, it could even be a few quarts more. A quart will make two healthy sized pies.

So just a couple of vines of pumpkins, several zuchini hills.....still leaves lots of room for chickens. And cabbage for saurkraut...And....

Yeah, I have a tendency to go overboard, 100 Tomatoe Plants, and never brought 1 in dang kids (and me eating while weeding). 200 ft of sweet peas, 1 meal.. 300 ft of Green beans... none in the house.. 40 watermelon plants plenty of melons.. 40 Cantelope.. Love that stuff. 7 200ft rows of sweet corn.. great baby corn for stir fry and a few rosting ears, I like it raw.. You see where this going? I also have to feed the deer just to get some for myself so it takes a lot...

And even though the kids are growing up and leaving home...they still come home for fresh garden produce and canned goodies.
Been there...still doing that.

By the way...tell Steph that 18 inch deep shelving needs lots of support structure...a quart can weigh three pounds...and a produce rotation system....Yeah Stephanie...you are hooked...line and sinker.

All Right!!!! New additons to your flock and going self sustainable. (We're a month away from beginning to set out onion plants.)
Can't wait to see your new additions. What did you get?

Evening all. Just in from the movies(saw Sherlock Holmes,it was good). Had a great day but spilled coke in the wifes car on the way home so I'm in the dog house again!

Junebug that is one tiny roo! You should enter him in the book of records! You can tell by your hand he is only inches tall. Thats some amasing breeding there!

Sooner and Les I always heard it was "see a man about a dog" and it didn't involve looking for bees either!lol, sooner I'll start watching the auctions for bee supplies for ya,I have actually seen bee suits and hives at the sales.

Joe love the pigeons! Especially the homer pair, and I usually don't like them. The blue ones splashes are really neat and unusuall! Glad to see someone else get the pigeon bug!
Joe did you take the turken roo to the sale? He sure is a cutie, love all the col, ors, now I am going to have to be on the look out for some ladys to go with him.

jcatblum hope you told Carla how much we are missing her on here. Sounds like she worked some goat majic on you!lol

Hi Wayne...so you scored the little Turken roo!

P&B and Sooner. Speaking of bees...do yu have to treat for vareo mites. I used to put a stri inside the hive in the winter nd then removed it before spring blooming season.
Remember there is a great Surplus store at 10th and Western in OKC that carries bee supplies...hive body kits, imprinted bees wax for the hive frames, tools, smokers....etc. with good prices

Morning comes early around here...going to shut down early tonight....unless I wake up around 2 am again.

I went to the BYC awards thread to see if there were Okies other than Ok_JuneBug who received an award in December and saw that DuckLover2399 also received a BYC Friend award!

December was a bit busy and I never made it to the nomination section to nominate anyone in December for a BYC award. For those of you who are curious about how to make a nomination and hopefully help someone get a BYC award listed beneath their name, here is the link to the nomination information
https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dENpa285MlNhX1ctNG5pOEttc0pWMnc6MQ#gid=0

Wouldn't
it be great if we could get a BYC award presented to a majority of our Okies?

I have tried to find the Surplus store at 10th and Western and have been unable to figure out its name by searching the net or phone book.

I am trying hard to avoid using chemicals in my hive, so try to get rid of any mites by sprinkling powdered sugar on the bees - they groom the mites off themselves when grooming off the powdered sugar.
