***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have a friend who's brother raised some over the summer, I can see if he has any? What are you looking for?

Oh that would be awesome! Looking for breeding pairs/trios/quads, or even ducklings later this spring. About the only color I'm really not interested in at this time is the white. Also, prefer breeding to SQ stock. Thanks!

Ksane, thanks for the comment. Anytime I have poultry close to a tank of water for other animals, I put a clean 4x4 post in it with a wieght tied to one end and one end sticking out so any chickens fall in they can climb out.

Hello everyone. It's been a rather eventful day around here. Some of you may remember that my son has been in some trouble at school lately. Well he was in another fight at school today. I'm at a loss on what to do with him. The fights usually aren't his fault, but today it was. Usually he is just defending himself, but today, he started it. I'm considering pulling him out of public school and homeschooling him in the evenings. Does anyone have any information on homeschooling in Oklahoma?

Shavon,

My heart broke when I read your post. This is an all-too-common situation in public schools in which the victim is the only person punished. If you have the time and the energy to follow through, you can effect change at your son's school, but it will mean hiring an attorney, enlisting the help of a doctor, and finding a sympathetic ear at your local police department. The frequency of the threats constitutes verbal assault. Physical assault is also apparent. The school is obligated to provide an environment in which your son feels safe. If the school is not willing or able to remove the aggressors, then they must negotiate with you to find an alternative educational opportunity for your son. I'm no longer teaching, so I have no clout and can't make calls for you, but there may be others who are still in the classroom and can work for you through your principal and school board. I was never in administration, but both my parents eventually ended up as school administrators, so I've heard the rational for disciplinary action, and the lack there of. Schools are funded based on the number of bodies in attendance. If there are five bullies and one victim, then there is less economic impact on the school to encourage the victim to be elsewhere. There is another government institution that has similar funding practices. Everyone there gets to wear an orange jumpsuit.

You are in the right on this one. If you decide to homeschool, let me know. I have a dear friend in Owasso who homeschools her children. She would be an excellent resource for you.

I wonder if that could've saved her. This stock tank is only 2'x4', it might've made the 4x4 too steep. I had a bad feeling about putting a stock tank out there in the 1st place.

Not a chance he will get tired of answering your questions. We can't help but find the energy we need to share the things we care about.

How nice. Does he raise chickens too? It must be hard to be so far apart. I miss my family (in Michigan and Ohio) more and more even as DH and I get more comfortable in Oklahoma.

Hi! I am new to the backyard chickens, but have had backyard chickens for a few years now. I live in Newcastle OK and love the americanas as well as the marans. My son, who is 8, has been wanting a Turken for a long time now. Is there anyone out there that might be able to sell me one or two? I dont have the ability to hatch, and would rather get a young chicken than a chick as we have a cat living indoors recovering from what we think was a coyote attack.

Also, I have tried PM'ing myself to see if it works, but I never get any messages - so dont think I am sending them out. Any ideas?

Thanks! :)

Welcome! I know there are some nice turkens around. There are quite a few people on the thread that raise them. I only have Cochins but would for sure get some NNs it I was getting LF. I know the chicks are very cute.

Everybody talking about getting bees on here. I sorta tossing it around myself. Its just that them little suckers make me nervous. Back 35 years ago when I was a teen I worked for a man that did landscaping, some of you may know him he now owns and operates sunshine nursery at Clinton. Any way had a blast working for him. Him and a dentist in Clinton named Doc. Irwin both played a big role in my love of Nubian goats, pigeons and chickens. Anyway he had several bee hives, extractors and all the other stuff that goes with bee keeping and I would help him in the collection and processing of the honey. I would have all the protective covering, rubber bands around my pants and shirt sleeves, everything you could do. Steve wouldnt have anything on but street clothes. I would always get stung and he never did much. He told me I probable put off an odor of being nervous. He was right and still is.

I wish I were better at wood working & it would be alittle cheaper to get started. It is an investment. I am looking forward to getting started. I have spent my evening so far getting the hive body & supers put together & started on the frames. Taking a break as my wrists are hurting.

I can't figure out why the avatars are blurry.

You still have both thumbs and all your fingers? If yes then your pretty good at wood working,
Does the project look perfect? If no then, Do the bees or birds care? if yes then get new birds / bees they're too picky but I'm more concerned about the fact you understood what they said.

Most of his problem is that the other kids bully him and cheat off of him. He is the biggest kid in the class and not weight wise. He is a good foot taller than the rest of them and is the smartest in the class. He has to turn his workbook into the teacher as soon as he is finished because it has been stolen several times this year. His way of keeping the others from cheating is to just not do the work. He usually walks away from fights and is then jumped from behind. He was taught to defend himself and it usually ends with the other kid on the ground. Today someone said something to him and he choke slammed them to a wall. This is not something that I condone. The school won't do anything unless the other kid does something first. They claim that "talk is cheap and we can't react unless it turns physical." That's the exact story that I got today because several kids have been threatening him lately. This was his 3rd offense and the school had to turn his name over to some higher authority for reprimand. He is currently suspended for the rest of the week. I don't know what is going to happen now. I will check out the program that you mentioned.

On another note, does anyone know if ADHD could be causing some of his attitude problems? He was determined to be borderline about 10 years ago and I chose not to medicate him. I am taking the kids for a checkup this afternoon. I am going to see about getting something for my daughter. DH and I discussed that we wouldn't medicate the kids unless it affected their schoolwork. DD has gotten to the point that she cannot focus in school at all. She is about to be held back because of it. I don't want to have my kids held back because of something that they can't control, especially when they are testing at the top of their class.

Editted to add that DS is almost 15 and DD is 6. The only other local school is full of kids that would end up leading him down a very bad path and I won't even consider that. The closest town is a complete drug hole. It's awful there.

I am so sorry that is happening to your son. It makes me furious that your school would say "talk is cheap" Where I work it is called harassment! When we can catch it or when we can get the offenders on the hot seat it is taken very seriously. Kids can get charged with harassment. We also often have fighters, depending on the situation, arrested. It is expensive for the family but it has cut back on violence and harassment ALLOT. I wish we teachers could do more but the best teachers are too busy to see everything and it takes a strong Administrative team.
My school has an excellent Social worker that is very kind and dedicated and also tough with the kids. She makes a big difference in the climate in the building. We are the only school in the district that has one and the district has figured that since no other school has one they are cutting the funding for her job at the end of the year. How are 1 and 1/2 counselors with more and more work and teachers with more and more "data"required to show how we are handling the low test score issues plus bigger and bigger classes going to handle the the social and emotional needs of our students? If we had smaller classes we could know our students better, what is happening in their lives that is keeping them from concentrating and excelling academically. I am very depressed about the future of Education.
