***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thanks for taking the time with these tips, I love reading them.
I've noticed in the 2 yards that are separated by chain link that the chickens will stick their head through and drink water from the other yard even though they have water in their yard. The idea of putting the rubber tubs on the outside of pens was a good one.
I agree!

It would save having to go inside each individual pen.
I had a chicken from the layers yard drown in the stock tank last week, that was very upsetting to find her floating in the water :( I had brick steps that led up to the edge of the stock tank so they could stand on it and drink. It was handy because I kept the stock tank heater in there and the sheep is in that yard also. I'd see some of them perch on the edge and get a drink, I think the water level was too low and she fell in and couldn't get out. So I changed the water situation in that yard.
Have anyone else ever had that happen? What makes me feel so horrible about it is she must have been just terrified, that kills me.
So sorry you lost the hen. I especially hate losing birds to accidents like that., very hard to forgive myself, like I should have known about the danger.

Shavon,

My heart broke when I read your post. This is an all-too-common situation in public schools in which the victim is the only person punished. If you have the time and the energy to follow through, you can effect change at your son's school, but it will mean hiring an attorney, enlisting the help of a doctor, and finding a sympathetic ear at your local police department. The frequency of the threats constitutes verbal assault. Physical assault is also apparent. The school is obligated to provide an environment in which your son feels safe. If the school is not willing or able to remove the aggressors, then they must negotiate with you to find an alternative educational opportunity for your son.
Yes, yes, yes! Why isn't your administration doing more to address this situation?

I'm no longer teaching, so I have no clout and can't make calls for you, but there may be others who are still in the classroom and can work for you through your principal and school board. I was never in administration, but both my parents eventually ended up as school administrators, so I've heard the rational for disciplinary action, and the lack there of. Schools are funded based on the number of bodies in attendance. If there are five bullies and one victim, then there is less economic impact on the school to encourage the victim to be elsewhere. There is another government institution that has similar funding practices. Everyone there gets to wear an orange jumpsuit.

You are in the right on this one. If you decide to homeschool, let me know. I have a dear friend in Owasso who homeschools her children. She would be an excellent resource for you.

Hi! I am new to the backyard chickens, but have had backyard chickens for a few years now. I live in Newcastle OK and love the americanas as well as the marans. My son, who is 8, has been wanting a Turken for a long time now. Is there anyone out there that might be able to sell me one or two? I dont have the ability to hatch, and would rather get a young chicken than a chick as we have a cat living indoors recovering from what we think was a coyote attack.

Also, I have tried PM'ing myself to see if it works, but I never get any messages - so dont think I am sending them out. Any ideas?

Thanks! :)

You have found a wonderful group of folks who either live in Oklahoma or wish they lived in Oklahoma.

Disclaimer: Some of the folks on this thread are addicted to hatching poultry, attending poultry auctions and/or otherwise acquiring poultry. Since addicts tend to be enablers, some of us may try to assist you in the acquisition of the same addictions we have to acquiring poultry.

If you want some turkens/Naked Necks and are not particular regarding color or gender, I would be delighted to gift ("enable") your son with a couple if you would come and get them. I don't have much luck identifying gender on turkens until they either crow or lay an egg, but have several extra that are several months old. You can send me an email - poultryandbees at gmail dot com

I wish I were better at wood working & it would be alittle cheaper to get started. It is an investment. I am looking forward to getting started. I have spent my evening so far getting the hive body & supers put together & started on the frames. Taking a break as my wrists are hurting.

I can't figure out why the avatars are blurry.

They are buzzing like bees?
I wish I could have an Apiary but I am allergic to bee stings.

I had on of my chickens fall into a large plastic tub a few years ago. It was so sad and I felt like poo-poo. It happens though, sorry it happened to you.

Wayne,

It's interesting that you said that, about being the only one who got stung. When my husband and I work outside, bees and wasps often land on me, walk around, and then leave. When one comes near my DH, he stops what he's doing and goes into he house. He would be stung if he stayed outside. He's a bee magnet.

I did one year...there was a neighborhood kid watching the calves and chickens then while we were gone for a few days. I think he didnt keep the tank topped off, and same thing happened as with you...water was too low and she couldnt get out. Needless to say the neighborhood kid never 'helped' out again. Very sorry for your loss.

I have heard that they can tell if your afraid of them(bees) and I am so I guess thats why they get me.I'm just a wimp when it comes to stings, not allergic to them jsut the pain they cause!lol

Brr! winter came in with a gust this afternoon. Had a few tornadoes around too! One struck a fram in the next town tore the place up pretty good.

I have been going thru the chick catalogs trying to figure out which has the best deal for the chicks I want to order. They sure are a lot higher than they used to be.
