OMG, Tony, you're a genius lol! Why didn't I think of that???? That way the girls will still get a break because some days I can skip and not put a boy in there. The boys will get a change of scenery and get to make food noises for real girls instead of each other. My husband says they always look confused when they make the food noise and toss food to another chicken and then look up. He says they're thinking, "Dang! You're a dude!"

What a cool picture! Every time I see baby pictures I think how awesome it would be to have tiny baby chicks to cuddle and play with. Then I look out into the yard and realize it wouldn't ever end. They grow up and 3 months later I'm still without baby chicks to play with. I'll admire your baby pictures but just be thankful it's not me having to raise them & build pens for them, how's that?

Keeping chickens, pigeons, and other birds free of external pests is a full time job. When I get new birds the first thing I do when unloading them into the quarantine pens is to spray them good with Bronco fly spray. I like Bronco as its active ingredient is Pyrethrins. Pyrethrins are natural insecticides produced by certain species of the chrysanthemum plant. In my fight against external pests I also hang an automatic fly spray dispenser in my buildings. I believe besides helping rid the flys, it also helps to keep lice and mites at bay. Another thing I do for my pigeons (pigeons love to bathe). I put a small hand full of Borax in the bath water. When all birds have bathed I dump the water so they don't drink any of it. Besides being more comfortable and healthy for the birds, it is more pleasant to pick up a bird and not see all the mite holes in the feathers.

Carl, your grandfather sounds wonderful. I wasn't blessed with grandparents that I was close to. I wish I'd have had an adult in my life like your grandfather when I was a kid.

Thank you Carl, I think this will be a quicker healing than the last shoulder. If he behaves himself. LOL.

Coral, I went with a very light blue, everything I have read said lighter colors for the summer time heat. When I got home with it DD said I should of got yellow & we could of painted black lines. That would of been alot more fun! Once it is all painted I will post a picture. Right now I am only working on painting the bottom board & the hive body because that is all I will need to start out.

When I bought my kit I got it large enough that I would have everything to grow with. I have two hive bodies, two super shallows & frames for all.

You could still make it fun w/ white clouds added to your blue.

Very true & I am sure that my DD will do something. I still have alot of time until April so there is really no telling how it will end up.

She has already said our next will be yellow with black stripes like a bee. Funny how this was my hobby & she is telling me how we will paint. LOL.

It is such a pleasure to know that the kids enjoy these things as much or more than we do at times. Sooner at least you are encouraging her to be active with many things, these are important life lessons that will stick with her.
I always tell my kids when they complain about things I do or make them do that I was not intended to be thier friend, but rather thier parent and in doing so they will have to do things they do not like at the moment. they will learn to appreciate some of these things as they age.
My grandfather always told me teh measure of how you did as a parent cannot be judged till the kids are are in thier 30's and learn what you were trying to teach them had a purpose. I had a great mentor in him and learned well beyond what many of my age at the time did as he was propably more open with me that he was with own kids when they were younger.
I just wish that my kids would have had teh opportunity to get to know him better as well. he passed away when my oldest was only 4 but she was "Papa's girl" ah.. she was spoiled.

Guy, thats a great Tip..
I always take any new arrival or one returning from a show and dip first in an Oxine and water mix, to kill any bateria virus, fungus etc. then dip in permethrin to rid any bugs. I allow them to dry naturally in a warm room and go from there. Keeping pests away is a real chore, I think worse in teh winter with all teh wild birds trying get to feed sources. those dang birds carry all kinds of stuff. Lice, Mites, fleas, and illness.

Got an update from DH in D.C. It's in the 40s and raining. The Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. sponsored a youth rally this morning around 7:00 a.m. The pre-march rally begins around noon, and then the march begins. I'm not sure what happens after the march, but I'm sure there will be a lot for DH to do. I hope a nap is on his list.

He's spent the last few nights on hall duty, chaperoning, trying to keep other groups' kids off their floor. I guess some groups didn't bring enough chaperons. The floor DH is on is all boys. At midnight last night a half dozen girls from a New Jersey group got off the elevator and told him they were going to their rooms. Yea, right. When he instructed them to go back to their own floor, they said they'd take the stairs. Wrong again. He's really, really tired of baby sitting teens.

I feel for you DH POCO, I wouldn't want to be in his shoes & I certainly hope he gets a nap!

Carl, I had a grandpa like that too. I work hard to make sure my kids get a chance at anything that they are interested in. I run alot to make it happen but it is worth it to see them learn the things that they like. Each of my kids have had an active role in the family & with household responsibility, I think it is important that they learn that nothing is free ,somewhere down the line someone has paid for it.
