***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Done with most of my chores.. Brooders are cleaned and sterilized, chicks moved to make room for this weeks hatch.
Indoor breeder pens cleaned with new shaving, all teh waterers cleaned inside and outside.
Shuffled the new pullets to the right males, well almost all of them have 2 to go but will be easier to catch them this evening when they go to roost.
Eggs moved to teh hatcher, didn't count.. don't want to know.
Now for teh household chores, sweep in is done.. now to mop and vaccume and do dishes trying to decide what I want to make for dinner.

Used to be good fishing there, but I haven't been there in a long time. The water level got so low last summer it was only a stream,

so don't know what it'll be like this year. I have a friend that used to noodle a lot on the upper end and did great. It is a beautifull area even if you don't catch much.

I just got head butted by my lab / rot dog, it was an accident now my head is pounding, and a put a nail through the tip of my finger and it is throbbing.

Didn't get nearly done what I wanted today, but I think I'm thowing in the towel before I injure something else! At least I am current on my tentanus, just got a booster last week at work.

OUCH! Sounds like a good time to quit the building projects for the day.

Very true & I am sure that my DD will do something. I still have alot of time until April so there is really no telling how it will end up.

She has already said our next will be yellow with black stripes like a bee. Funny how this was my hobby & she is telling me how we will paint. LOL.

Beekeeping may be something she decides to do as a 4H project.

I selected a pale mint green for my hive bodies and bright yellow for the lids. My bottom boards are a pretty pastel blue. I actually selected the green color from a color chart - but all the other colors were on sale at the Habitat for Humanity Renovation station. Some commercial beekeepers seem to use whatever paint is available - cheap. I have seen some strange colors created when they poured several colors together and mixed them. The bees don't seem to mind what color their home is painted, but one that is yellow with black stripes would be way cool. The only criteria is that it be outdoor paint.

Well,
The hatcher is warming up and getting ready to do it's job over the next three days. Yeah, more little fuzzy things that will grow feathers and make folks happy.
NanaKat, your eggs go in there this evening too. I plan to seperate the Cochin and Wyandottes from the others in different hatching trays. Would you like me to toe punch them when I remove them from the hatcher so they can tracked as they grow?

That would be wonderful! You think of everything! Once they reach full grown size, it's not easy to tell who comes from which years hatch. I keep really good records on the cows and kept realloy close records on the lovebirds. Looks like I need to start a breeding notebook for the chickens.

My grandfather taught me a lot, they raised me for the first 7 years of my life and I stayed all my summers working Kansas wheat fields and weekends with them. He was a very inteligent man, likely one of the most intelegent individuals many ever met and had a good heart. There were few things he told me that I did take to heart. I definetly would not be who I am without his influence when I was young.
he was medically retired when he was 45 with his 5th heart attack and worked circles around everyone else up till he was nearly 70. I really looked up to him, nothing got in his way once his mind was set what ever he wanted to accomplish got done.

Your Grandfather sounds like both of my Grandmothers. They were the Matriarchs of the family and neither was afraid to attempt any project with full gusto. They were wonderful mentors for their grandchildren.

I always tell my kids when they complain about things I do or make them do that I was not intended to be thier friend, but rather thier parent and in doing so they will have to do things they do not like at the moment. they will learn to appreciate some of these things as they age.
My grandfather always told me teh measure of how you did as a parent cannot be judged till the kids are are in thier 30's and learn what you were trying to teach them had a purpose. I had a great mentor in him and learned well beyond what many of my age at the time did as he was propably more open with me that he was with own kids when they were younger.
I just wish that my kids would have had teh opportunity to get to know him better as well. he passed away when my oldest was only 4 but she was "Papa's girl" ah.. she was spoiled.

Sage advice from both.
