***OKIES in the BYC III ***

For the hoop house it is 6 mil greenhouse plastic. They sale it at American plant products in Okc. They are a wholesaler-- but they will sale anyone greenhouse supplies. -- but the smallest length is 100ft. Thankfully that means the plastic for a larger house is already built. DH says next yr he will use poly pipe or galvanized. This yrs hoop house was so small so we could experiment with what I liked before dumping a bunch of money building a big one. Noble foundation & Kerr center both have plans online to build the houses.

I put 4 mil contractors plastic across the top of my chicken lean too-- (just to keep the chill off the birds) it has survived the wind & climate since November, so I am thinking it would work to cover a hoop house for a yr.

Good Morning Okies'

I feel better this morning~ Jcat I like the green house, wish I had one.
Did everyone do okay at the auction? I hope there is one the weekend I am in the city.

I'm collecting old windows to build a green house. I may have enough pretty soon. Then I have an old tin outbuilding that the tin skin is bad on but the structure is still good so I'm going to skin the building and recover it w/ my windows......... eventually.

Thanks! I never thought i would have filled it up so quick, we are going to have to make more shelves inside or I will be forced to stop planting! When I lived in town I priced out recovering a metal type shed with polycarbonate sheets. It was going to cost almost as much as buying the lean too greenhouse one I bought from samsclub. Plus DH anticipated it being a real pain. I really like the look of some that are made from recycled windows but DH objects to the amount of work involved in retro fitting old windows. When we build our new home next spring I would like a sun room-- but I need to research & weigh the pros & cons..... Such as does low E windows provide a spectrum of light that will all plants to grow- how expensive will it be to try & cool a sun room or how expensive will it be to shade a sun room. I know I would enjoy it in the winter, but when it is 115 outside I would hope we could still walk into the room and not melt. One other huge hurdle will be picking a house plan that will work with a sunroom. Told DH sunroom could also be incubator room & he didn't object, which is a really good start!

I didn't see who else was bidding on them, They were a nice pair and that Roo was just gorgeous I sure hope that barring pattern is passed on to all his children, I will be looking for a few more hens later to go with him I have 4 as of now

I love your hoop house! I would like to start one for my back yard. But not one that large. :) What are the supports that hold up the plastic? Are those PVC?

Back from auction. Didn't place a single bid -- but DD got the brooder thanks to Jarvis Michael & P&B. DD also got 2 pretty birds she really wanted. I am glad she enjoys birds & glad she has her own money she earns to buy stuff with. Let the new birds come inside to get a drink & a bite to eat. They are very friendly. Thinking the blue one might not be laying yet-- or just starting to lay. Guess we will find out in the next few days.
Had 2 copper marans hatch out while I was gone.
Nana I have a hoop house my seedlings are going in this yr. when I lived in town I used a small lean to style greenhouse-- but I outgrew that quickly. I actually seem to have outgrown the hoop house too. DH said today he didn't realize how small the hoop house was-- glad he understands next yr I will need a bigger one! I didnt even have to ask. Think the hoop house is 10x18 Here is a pic the DH text me a few wks ago-- the barrels are full of water so that heat up during the day & supply some heat @ night. If it drops below freezing I have row cover over the plants plus run a heater. I have only had to use a heater 2 nights so far. The hoop house was all recycled materials except the plastic, screws & hardware. The hardest part was finding a day when the wind wasn't blowing to put the plastic on. There are doors on both ends & sides roll up for days when it is above 65-70 outside since it will reach 90-100+ quickly & cook the plants.

Got all the new adult birds in the quarentine coops. DH went and picked up a few roosters for me in Tulsa today and they have worms so gotta get them wormed before they come out of quarentine. But I guess that is to be expected. I think we are done buying birds for a while unless I get my guineas or my barred rock hens I want.

Ok. I am a novice. How can you tell if your chickens have worms? I am wondering if mine do have worms and did a search on BYC and didn't get any info that I understood. Do the remedies like garlic in the water really work or do I need to get commercial wormer (which I don't want to do).

Thanks.

I have about 30 aluminium framed windows on a pallet in the back of my place I've been saving for just that reason, Most have been there for years and are very dirty but usable, If I should ever decide that I "Don't do windows" they could be up for grabs LOL Most are 30" or larger

Nice set-up. When you start plants, you can never have enough room.

We built the MIL a green house from 10 4 foot x 10 foot windows from a renovated school. 3 on each end and four and a door on the other. We attached it to the end of her garage lining up the door with the walk-in garage door. We used a L shaped sink/cabinet unit for a work space and ran a grey water line from the sink to the fruit trees. The floor was brick. The roof is green and clear corrogated plastic. We put in venetian blinds and a ceiling fan. During the winter we moved her picnic table in there and it was very comfor able. During the spring and summer, the temp can be adjusted by raising the windows. With shelving for plants all the way aroun, it hasd served her well over the past 25 years.

I have been thinking of turning my front porch into a sunroom. One thing is a must is to put tinting on the windows and install an exhaust fan. Might have to install a window unit, as much as I really do not want to.
I am lucky I have a lot of large trees here to give me some shade.

One sign that your chickens have worms is the comb and waddles are ashy. Here is what I do for worming the chickens. I use crush red peppers (like the ones you get to put on pizza) and once a month add DE (Diatomatious Earth) mixed to the their feed. For the pepper and DE it is 1 cup of each per 200lbs. Both have other benefits other then worming. The pepper will help raise the body tempture in the winter and DE is a highly digestible form of calcium.

Thirty windows should be sufficent to build a sunroom or a good start for a greenhouse. There are quite a number of designs/plans on line on how to build a greenhouse out of windows. Some are really pretty.
