***OKIES in the BYC III ***

That's too funny! I moved to OK in 2000 from the east coast and I really had a time figuring out Okie-speak. First time I heard 'fixin to' I said you're WHAT?!? My cousin/co-worker said I'm officially Okie back in 2005 when she heard me say "how big a'wide is it? when asking someone the size of something.

Anyway, Hi y'all! I'm fairly new to BYC, see my intro here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/586118/another-okie-new-to-byc

I drop in time to time to look something up and figured I'd better drop in more often since spring is about here and I'm getting 5 red stars from a neighbor in a few weeks. I look forward to hanging around more often!
hi, where in Okieland do you live.

i'm sure someone will be along later with the official welcome

Is he peeping really loudly too? The clicking when he breathes makes me think that it's possibly a ruptured air-sac which is a common problem with chicks.

Look him over really well to make sure that there is no air trapped under the skin at the base of the neck. It should look like a puffy place if there is. If you can confirm there is air trapped the place can be relieved by nicking the area with the point of a razor blade, just a poke and not a slice. It may have to be repeated a time or two until the air-sac heals up. And it should heal in just a day or two.

no- no peeping, i held him for awhile, gave him some duramycin in the water, dripped it on his beak, he got more alert and wanted back with mom, just checked him and he is not panting, not as fluffed- what causes a ruptured air-sac?

Read your introduction page: A copperhead in the henhouse dropping down on your hubby! That would scare the heebie jeebies out of me!!

I have seen the idea about planting in a bale of straw before, but didn't think it economically feasable w/ the price and size of straw that I have access to, and also didn't think it would survive our dry hot summers, it looked like I would waste a ton of water, but I didn't try it so that might not be the case.

I think I might try it this year. Now I need to find a round bale or two that I can unroll and re-bale.

Would a prick with a needle for a syringe also be effective to release the trapped air thru the needle?

Oh getting stepped on by mom or siblings, playing to roughly and I think just about anything actually. Like I said it's very common in chicks. Very visible in the NNs but not so much in the others. Most of the time it's not noticable unless it causes them pain from the trapped air and they peep loudly.

I have even used a straight pin when I didn't have anything else handy. Doesn't take much of a hole to let the air out but the effects are immediate. They perk up and stop peeping loudly and go back to being chicks.
