Kass, your birds are beautiful! They look so very healthy. Your girls aren't missing the feathers on their heads from the roo, I wonder why not (he's soooo pretty, by the way). I was thinking of taking the Faverolles boy away from the girls because he's got the feathers pulled out of the back of the head of one of them. I do NOT like that at all Your roo hasn't done that to yours though.

No, none are missing any feathers at all from his breeding, he has been an amazing roo, I was really nervous about a "hatchery boy" b/c of all the stories on here about how bad they are, but he has been awesome. I know on here hatchery is almost a dirty word, but all my chickens have been great, pretty, healthy, lay well, good personality, couldn't ask for anything else in a chicken.

"Little Roger" is doing great - such a talkative guy, heard him crowing loud and clear this morning. He eats alot too. What he doesn't eat, he throws out of the feeder! ha!

ya know i could say something smart about disageeable women, but i wont.

i have old english in very small cages just big enough for breeding, and dont have a bit of trouble with it.

i have seen it in young roo's, and i have seen it in old roo's, i wish i could tell you why it happens. only thing i can say is overzelous roo's.

I've got 200 onions put in and I'm working on potatoes and strawberries. I've been doing some reading on strawberries since I have never been successful w/ them they seem to suggest fall planting and pulling them up after they bear and complete replanting in the fall. Anyone w/ strawberry experience have any thoughts on that. Seems so wasteful to keep buying new plants when they have runners, and they are hard to find in the fall.

I've had strawberry plants that have been producing runners since 1996. The drought last year got all but 13 of them and those have been reset in a new bed waitng for spring rains.

I love cochins, and I've got 18 bantam eggs for hatching this week and 18 more for 2 more weeks! Can't wait...Yours look like black/blue/splash? 18 of mine are 10 different colors and 18 are project Mill Fluer!

Yes, there are Blue Black and Splash. They are large fowl and will be big..they already eat liker big birds. LOL

I put in a dozen strawberries last spring and with a lot of TLC, one of them actually survived the brutal summer we had, and is really growing well right now. Had a big bed of them where I used to live and they produced for a few years before I moved. The bed ended up being twice as big as I planned because of the runners after the first year. They like even watering and a light mulch to keep the soil cool in summer, and dry mulch in winter helps to keep them from freezing to death. Good luck this year! I have volunteer lettuce already growing and am hoping we don't have the same summer this year.

Kass what kind are yours are they Americauna? and is that the same as an EE? I'm going to end up taking all the hens away from my production red Roo and I thought I might find him some replacements that won't be as big a deal to keep pure bred, I wonder if there is a better breed for that? I might just get mutts since he probably is a mutt anyway LOL He is a pretty bird though when esp when he has tail feathers he got them yanked out by a dog last fall they are just now starting to come back in well. I need to remember to ask Deanne what kind pullets those were that I got from her I really liked them and they had a color that I though was going to make pretty babies from Red.
