***OKIES in the BYC III ***

i like that top one- but if my hutch from them is any example, you may need to reinforce it a bit to be predator proof- the wire is stapled...
That's good to know ahead of time. Maybe I should keep looking at plans to build something......

Yes they are from a hatchery, but a small family run one. Cedar Creek Hatchery. I really wanted either the blue and splash NN or Banjoes black skinned ones. Banjoes was my first choice, but there were some techno difficulties so I settled on the blue and splash ones, which is probably for the better anyway since I'm wanting to raise them for meat, not sure how I was going to wrap my mind around eating black meat. Gary didn't think it would be much of an issue b/c he still thinks I'm not going to be able to do the deed in the end.
Cedar creek had the colors and Nava had the colors I wanted in the end I went w/ the best $ deal, and cedar creek had awesome feed back everywhere I asked. And so far their customer service has been outstanding. Very prompt call backs, very friendly, very informative. The only negative comment I had about them (not from me but when I was researching) was they sell their chickens to cheaply for the quality. (He was someone else who sells chicks and hatching eggs and stated it was bringing others prices down)
Anyway I am way excited about getting my baby chicks, and you guys can rest assured when I do there WILL be pics!!!!
I'm anxious to see if you'll be able to kill them, too. It's the looking them in the eye and ending their life that would be hard. If you can kill those NN's then I can place extra chicks. Maybe we should make a pact. Honestly, I admire you for doing it. They get a really good spoiled life with lots of good food and they don't know what's coming at the end. Well.....unless you mess up

. It's a better life that most chickens get actually.
Cathie, that picture is great and both are adorable. Is that one of the OEGB's you got from Carl?

JCat, that's hilarious what you said about not falling down at his work lol
I met OceansEve (Laura, right?) on the side of the road at 11:00 last night and she bought my incubator. Only chicken people meet on the side of a country road at almost midnight, I felt like I was selling black market incubators or something Ha!

OMG!!! I agree! Hubby and I met up with Oakieridge's DH Sat night (Sun morning!) to get eggs they had picked up for us at Newcastle. I just knew someone was going to wonder what in the world we were passing from one car to the next. Wouldn't the police have been surprised to stop us and find cartons full of eggs!
gig.gif

Well got that chicken tractor finished, without dh's help and didn't lop off any fingers in the process!!! Me and power tools don't exactly mesh so I avoid them at all costs but used the jigsaw today without mishap. Moved the chicks out of the feed house to the chicken tractor.

In my house people start to panic if I handle knives! At our wedding family members didn't want us to have a unity candle, they just knew that I would wind up burning the church down!! How's that for clumsy. People still talk about that and reunions!!!

if you girls dont stop with all this clandestine activity you are gonna get in trouble!

a bunch of black minivans with limo tinted windows, buncha gals in black trenchcoats and mirrored sunglasses listening to each other on earbuds, plotting the demise of the neighbors cat because it "dissed" one of their chicks!

using chicken wire for hairnets is their "tag". each one carrying a small bag of "scratch' around for party favors.

I'm thinking hard on whether to buy the 24 egg Brinsea or the manual 10 egg (the other is out of stock) or none at all. I'm so scared I'd be bawling my eyes out running down the road after the people who took my extra boys begging them to come back with them

I can part with other animals, dogs, horses (in a heartbeat), I placed my donkey and didn't look back, cats, sheep and goats. Maybe after a few more hatches it'll get easier? If I felt like someone actually wanted them and was happy to get them maybe I could. But there's not homes like that out there.
Edit: Oh wow. Me and Buster52's posts don't exactly belong on the same page, huh?

Thanks for meeting me so late BTW. Stopped and got another hygrometer today, planning on seperating the duck and chicken eggs tonight! Yeah!!

Hey Everybody...

We did it... we finally closed on the Farmhouse... Now I can safely buy and gather all the chickens I want without worry .... Hmmm chicken math for 15 acres is what?

That place looks wonderful! I would be in trouble if I had to hang onto a deed.... half the time I can't find my keys, phone and/or license....

A big reason why I raise my own meat is because I love animals in general. I can't stand to think of them suffering, and it is my belief that is what happens in factory farm systems. I don't want to contribute to that, so I make the effort to avoid factory farmed meat, instead choosing to raise animals in the fresh air and on pasture. Further, I want to give people in my community access to the same sort of meat options.

That's the way I used to feel when I picked up my raw milk!

Saturday at Blanchard will be two pair of India Blue Peacocks. One pair is 3 to 4 years old and the other 1 1/2 to 2 years old. They told me the older male as about 4 to 5 foot tail. Lots of eggs, baby chicks coming. One consignor is selling out. Should be several cages, feeders, waterers and other supplies. There was part of this last sale. Not real sure what birds he has left. The dogs have been getting some of those.Last sale he had chocolate and bronze gunieas so there may be more. Lots of large birds coming.

Will try to update before the sale.

Anyone have a Bourbon Red turkey hen you like to sell. Let me know. I know someone that is looking for one. Call me and i will help you sell it.

Yes he is one that didn't make the breeding cut at Carl's but is so adorable. He was kind of stand offish at first but Jack has gone out everyday and played with him and he has come around. He has recently learned to crow and it cracks me up to hear him. He is growing on me too, lol.

Ksane, I'm not sure if you were on the thread when I had the two chickens I had to mercy kill or not, but it was excessively traumatic for me. But I went into the corner and licked my wounds for a while and came up w/ a new plan. Not sure if it will work either, but I tried to address the main issue I had w/ the actual killing, I think once I get past the killing the processing won't be as psychologically hard.
