***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Just heard about my little blue and splash NN's. The hatch had some issues so there were only 7, since I didn't want any replacements looks like it is going to be a week or two longer

Were they from the hatchery, Kass?
That's sure a pretty NY house. I would love a tall place like that.
I found this 53" x 24" chicken tractor on Hayneedle.com

I don't think I can build a tractor for under $85 (can I?) so I'm thinking I'll get the tractor for my precious Modern Bantam pair I got at Newcastle in Jan, I just love those 2. And I found this adorable 2'x2' little pink house for my Serama, Channing for $65 haha. He's such a princess anyway. When it gets warmer he'll have a 5x10 covered pen where my bench, table and umbrella are at. He's going to share it with 2 of the OEGB girls I got from Jarvis's awhile back. (Thank you for them, Carl, they've got the sweetest little personalities).
Do you guys think a 2x2 is big enough for the 3 to be locked in at nighttime? They're each smaller than a pigeon. I wanted 2 girls with him because he'll be inside in the winter and bad weather and I didn't want to have a single hen be alone all winter. I originally started a savings envelope to buy the coop RetiredArmyWife has so I've been saving for awhile. But I think I may get these 2 things instead.

Buster -- I have a girl that I use to be part of the food coop I had in Lawton. She bought birds from Grady & would like 25 birds. Pm me your info I will pass it along-- and I am thinking you may need to order more birds!

It has occurred to me I have been thinking about my future chicken processing equipment purchase all wrong.

So, I'm now thinking of this purchase more like a riding lawnmower or a dish washer. It will make a job I feel I have to do anyway significantly easier. The fact that I will eventually make all that money back through bird sales is simply icing on the cake.

How's that for rationalizing a purchase?

You convinced me!

Hey Everybody...

We did it... we finally closed on the Farmhouse... Now I can safely buy and gather all the chickens I want without worry .... Hmmm chicken math for 15 acres is what?

Congratulations Jeannie!! Wonderful news! I'm sure closing has made the wait worth it. Love the history part of the Deed. As for Chicken math for 15 acres...remember youonly count the ones that are laying eggs... Mawahahahahahahahaaaaaa!

Sorry you have to wait longer...I'm guessing you want them to arrive all the same age and kind all at the same time. Your resolve is impressive.

Yes they are from a hatchery, but a small family run one. Cedar Creek Hatchery. I really wanted either the blue and splash NN or Banjoes black skinned ones. Banjoes was my first choice, but there were some techno difficulties so I settled on the blue and splash ones, which is probably for the better anyway since I'm wanting to raise them for meat, not sure how I was going to wrap my mind around eating black meat. Gary didn't think it would be much of an issue b/c he still thinks I'm not going to be able to do the deed in the end.

Cedar creek had the colors and Nava had the colors I wanted in the end I went w/ the best $ deal, and cedar creek had awesome feed back everywhere I asked. And so far their customer service has been outstanding. Very prompt call backs, very friendly, very informative. The only negative comment I had about them (not from me but when I was researching) was they sell their chickens to cheaply for the quality. (He was someone else who sells chicks and hatching eggs and stated it was bringing others prices down)

Anyway I am way excited about getting my baby chicks, and you guys can rest assured when I do there WILL be pics!!!!

Well got that chicken tractor finished, without dh's help and didn't lop off any fingers in the process!!! Me and power tools don't exactly mesh so I avoid them at all costs but used the jigsaw today without mishap. Moved the chicks out of the feed house to the chicken tractor. So far they are all nesting in the enclosed part but a few have gotten brave enough to go out in the yard of it. Hopefully they will get brave enough to explore the yard later without us out there.

Hubby is down at a neighbors helping him put the roof on his new storage shed so no more outside construction for today. Did get the runs in all the coops covered in pine shavings to help keep them out of the mud. They sure are enjoying the sunshine that came out a while ago.

The little boys played in the mud for a while then went to play with thier little roosters. Here is a picture of Jack with his little rooster. It was supposed to be a tick eater but Jackson has fallen in love with him so he is now a "pet", lol.

morning everyone, flo didn't make it, sigh... its been a rough year already...

someone on FB referred me to this link, wanted to pass it on

Oh no, Robin, I am so sorry to hear about your Flo!

Silkies and other crested birds (especially with vaulted skulls) are notoriously bad for getting head injuries...if that is any consolation.
