***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well I am at home today so will finish up school work with the little boys in the next 30 mins and then get outside to do some yard work. I wasn't planning a day off work but sometimes that is the way things go.

Cowboy sorry to hear about all the medical stuff going on. Hopefully you will be back on your feet quickly. Love all the pictures. The boys keep hinting at rabbits but I am at my limit with dogs, cats and chickens.

Funny for the day, Jackson had a word problem that read "If 2 birds can share a cage and there are 20 birds how many cages do you need?" Jackson looked at me and said "hope they aren't all roosters or they will kill each other sharing a cage like that!" LOL To think if I had gone in to work today I would have missed that bit of wisdom, haha.

What are you planning to use for shade?

I have some stuff in the garden & it appears that most of it faired pretty good with the rain.
Potato's, corn, bush beans, purple hule pea's, sugar pea's, cucumber, squash, onions, lettuce & spinach.

I won't get much time this weekend but I am really tempted to go get one of those really big tomato plants from walmart with tomato's already on it just so I can have some sooner! I haven't picked a date to get mine out but if the weather continues as it is I will get them out soon.

I have half buried tires in the run and am going to plant inside w/ vining or vining type plants (malabar spinach, cukes, squash, indeterminant tomatoes etc...) then encircle the planted tires w/ sturdy wire fence ( the stuff they put in concrete) planted in sets of 3 tires w/ space between them then topped and connected w/ the same wire. The plan is the plants will grow up and over the wire making green shade for the girls. They won't be in these runs until after it gets really hot (the last of June or so) so the plants should be good and big both for shade and so they can't do any serious damage by pecking at whatever leaves they can reach. That is the plan anyway, this is my first attempt at this so we'll see how it goes.

I should find out today if I am getting my chicks this week

I keep checking the email, but last week they called so I bet that's what they do again this week.

I wish I could unread the garden stuff so I wouldn't be tempted.
We're thinking of clearing this weekend for a small garden. I want to start with only a few things because I can't even make dandelions grow. Is it too late to plant watermelon, cantaloupe & corn?
My husband ordered some trees, too. I'm wanting to turn the whole back yard area into a chicken friendly area with hot wire on the outside of the perimeter fence. There's a bunch of trees coming up from last summer that I've been babying. I think they're cottonwood.
Kass, about the Oriental with the bald area on his keel bone-when I was researching those birds everything said that was desirable and a sign of good breeding. I just love how those birds look. But I think I'll go with the standard sized Modern Game instead of something as cantankerous (with other birds) as Orientals.

ROFL!! I love his sense of humor!!

I'm really glad you like to take pictures because I would like to see it as you get it going!

I have soccer practice tonight so once again I won't get my raised bed for the Asparagas done. DH is going to plant most of the tree's. He will have to wait on the pear's because I don't know where I want them & didn't have time to figure it out yesterday.

Mitzi you should be good to go to put corn in the ground, might wang to check mesonet.org & see what temp your soil is now. Some corns need warmer soil than others. I am planting a super sweet variety that needs 70 degrees to germinate. To be successful melons may be too soon. If you want to play it safe your suppose to wait until any chance of freeze has past for melons. I am putting a few melons in the ground this am, but I has LOADS of melon seed! So if I loose these to a freeze I can replant.

You will love going into the back yard to harvest your veggies, even if you only feed them to the birds! Never saw a chicken not like watermelon!

This year again we will have the option of two different colors!!! I think they look great! When you are ready to place your order please PM me with T-shirt in the subject line, if you do not receive a reply from me please follow up to make sure I have your order as I will have several lists & this is the only way to insure that you have your shirt.

The shirt will cost 9.00 per shirt for youth small to adult XL, anything over that will be an additional 1.00 per X (for instance XXL will be 10.00)

No money will be needed to order your shirt but please make sure that you will be at the event to get your shirt, I know things happen & if that does please contact me so we can make other arrangements.

Oh good, I was afraid I was too late. I'll get a lot bigger kick out of it taking care of it knowing it's for the chickens than I would if I was having to do it for us. There's an area about 200 ft from the house in back that is the wettest part of the yard. I'm thinking that would be a good place to put a garden.
