What time does Blanchard start taking consignments? Think we are going to drop chicks off tomorrow then head to frontier city a few hours. It is opening day! We need to get our passes made so we don't have to fight the crowd at the switch foot concert in 2 wks.

Happy Friday everyone!

Is anybody doing any kind of prepping for their chickens/coops in light of the upcoming storms this weekend?
Was wondering if it's better to lock the chicken up in the coop before the storms hit or do I need to keep the coop door open in case something happens so they have an escape route.

When my chickens are out of the coop during the day, I leave the door open for them to go in and out of. Some (but not all) of them go in there to escape the rain. I have been known to run out there in a hail storm, though, and shove them all into their coops. Depending on your setup and comfort level, do what seems to be in their best interest, but personally, I wouldn't lock them in.

I will put you down for potato salad, I'm not sure of the number right now. Monty keeps that list & I haven't kept up sorry.

I don't know what the correct answer is, but I lock mine up at night storm or no. I figure they are safer inside then outside where the lightening, hail, and wind, not to mention preditors. During the day I keep the coop door open, storm or no, assuming they have sense enough to get in if the weather turns real bad, but they also have protection from the hail and rain maybe some wind b/c my coops are raised and they can shelter under the coop too. The most "prepping" I do is the human door is solid hardware cloth for ventilation, so if it is going to storm I generally cover the door w/ a towel (still allows for air movement through the towel, but blocks pouring rain from getting in the coop.

Took Blue Bitsy out of her pen and gave her some special treatment this morning. She was not eatting and seemed a little cold. She hung out on top of the brooder boxes nibbling on tasty treats like May flies and mealworms and Red cell water. She is a Lav cochin cross with one of the Black sex-link and is so sweet. She will stand on your foot to make you notice her and stares into your eyes like she is lovestruck. Was glad to see she perked up and was eatting good this evening. Going to leave her on the brooder shelf with extra feed and water until morning. She settled down and was snoozing. So were the week olds next to her
.
What a pretty girl! This makes me want to cross my Black Star to one of the Cochin boys-wow. The genetic calculator is kind of confusing, it says Black to Blue gives you BBS. It doesn't tell you that you get that cool looking brown color and such a sweet face. They really need to update that calculator

Good morning!!!!
You're a wonderful photographer, I love that picture and how you do props. Aren't they adorable at this stage where they're losing fuzz yet don't have feathers? lol
I'm still debating on hatching some BBS Ameraucana, just not sure.
Didn't Okla say he had Bantam Ameraucanas??

Good morning!
Ksane - Yeah I'll take him if it doesn't bug you he'll be a barn cat. I remember that stage, I pulled three kittens out a shelter that were no more than two days old, their mom was stressed, had them in the shelter, refused to feed them cause she was so scared. She was being put down that day and the animal control woman was just going to leave the kittens in the cage till they died. I took those home, lost one the first day, but raised the other two big, they were good cats. But that's just fine, if you want to wipe his little fluffy butt for me I'm more than happy to let you do it!

Duckies! One of my Cochin girls is named "Duckie" because she waddled like a duck when she was little.
These other 2 are going to be "barn cats". I've spent the past 30 yrs with indoor cats, my 4 are seniors now and I sure don't want to start another 15 yr commitment to changing litter boxes. I fell off my "keep cats inside" soapbox years ago when I realized they're happier outside. They may live to 10 instead of 15 but it's a happy life. I'm all for giving him to you now but it probably is better they stay together for a few wks anyway. This is what I was afraid would happen if they were here even 10 minutes. I thought I hated cats and keep getting proved wrong.

Put me down for a couple 24-packs of pop. Any specific kind?

Congratulations on the new hatchling! Will keep baby, mom and dad in my prayers, and hope everyone gets to go home soon. Keep us posted on baby's progress.

Most of mine head there in the early afternoon anyway so I'm going to go lock them all in before the storms start. I don't let them out on days it's supposed to be raining hard cause most of them aren't that bright :p I think they are better off in the barn during a tornado than outside, but I don't know. That's just the way I feel about it. If the storm blows the barn over I think they'd find a place to hide, we have enough stuff in there they shouldn't get crushed.

That list of food it making me hungry..... might have to make some potato salad for dinner
