***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Been out in the garden. The storm got the best of things. Had tomato plants that were already setting fruit & they are smash to pieces. Lost most of the stuff I had in the ground. Several hundred tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, greenbeans, etc Good thing I started so many extras in jan-feb. Back up plants are going in the ground after lunch. Will be a long day of playing in the dirt.

So sorry about your garden. The temperatures have been sufficiently mild it was a good year to plant early - and we can get hail at any time of the year in Oklahoma. I am tired just reading about your day planting all those replacement peppers and tomatoes.

Is the Newcastle auction still going tomorrow night?
I saw that Elwood already confirmed that Newcastle is scheduled for tomorrow night and the new start time is at 5 pm. I too want to thank Modernman/Scoots for the phone call to remind me of the new start time. I haven't been to many poultry auctions this year, but I do enjoy the Newcastle auction.

robin - I love that action pic!

Ummmm.... okay while mowing my overgrown land.... I may have discovered a plant that is not so legal

I am mowing it under, but I was wondering if I pull it will it come back? Or does that plant have a root system that will keep it coming back. I don't want to risk someone accusing me of growing it!

If you mow it will return. If it is established it will come back from root. Very prolific plant. Most likely not primo stuff, just wild stuff looking for a place to grow. FYI, it should be cut at base of stock and hung upside down to cure, not mowed.

Elwood if you have any of that cane left after poops pease bring some to the June meet and put my name on a few sprigs. I love growing things like that.
We are finally getting some munch needed rain tonight. I set out some wave petunias today so maybe they will have a good start!

If you cut the cane between each node where the little plantlets are trying to grow, you can root each one. Shove them straight down in some loose soil so where the part growing off the cane is about an inch below the soil level with the leaves facing up above ground. Water well and don't let them dry out this summer. Treat them just like you would seedlings and you'll have plenty on new plants to plant, trade or give away. Would make a great privacy fence too.

BTW, They'll root in water too. Just takes longer for them to get established when you plant them out.

You will be fine putting any egg under the wyandotte, They are great mothers and outstanding Broodies when they decide to sit your best bet is to let them they break faster that way. Warning first let her keep the chicks for about 1 week then take them so she will go back to laying otherwise she will go straight back to sitting.

Thank your Carl. The one that is broodie is the oldest of your original girls. She is a growler, but still very sweet tempered. I'll move her into a nest with her eggs inside in the morning before we leave for Sarah's and add the freshest OEGB to the nest.

I had some out of state visitors came to see me yesterday I got some good shots of them they didn't seem bothered by me or the flash or the goats that were racing all over the place I wouldn't mind if some decided to nest or hang out I think they are way cool :)

We have been fortunate to have a pair return to us for almost 10 years. They pair for life. Lucy and Goosey have gotten "tame" enough to come to the barn for scratch...I can get within 5 feet of them before the gander shakes his head at me. They have gotten used to the farm vehicles so now we can drive by them without them taking flight. Beautiful birds.

and just a fun pic for ya

that is the 7th chick
Love this picture!

Since you have recently moved in...your local PD may already know the plants are there since the earlier owners "lost" the property. Brush killer Round-up can be sprayed on the growing plant and will kill it.

I've used it on iris and day lillys where I couldn't get the grass out. No problems. Just make sure there isn't anything in the grass family where you use it. I killed some strap leafed palm seedlings last summer. Found out palms are in the grass family too.

Anything you ain't sure of, test it on a small area. I found Lilly of the valley is probably in the grass family cause it'll hurt that too. I know Lowes carries it.
Did you start those from seed? If so, how did you do it. I have three palm seeds from my Dad's home in Florida that I want to try to start.

I'll load some up and bring to POOPS then I have a ton of the cane growing, I am trying to see if I can get it to grow from the canes that were grown last year it didn't get cold enough this winter to kill it back so it's putting off all over the old stalks I don't know if any of it will take it would have to make new roots from the cutting and haven't found any info on doing that just though I'd give it a try the worst thing that can happen is I have something to add to the compost pile LOL

Sounds like a neat experiment.

Have a couple chick pics to share:

New Coturnix quail hatch, 60 of 'em! My phone's camera doesn't do them justice, there are English Whites, Scarlets, Manchurians, Tuxedos, and Tibetans in this batch.

Chinese Blue Breasted Quail, CBBQ (Button quail) those tiny dudes are quick and won't hold still for the camera!

Size comparison, both hatched yesterday, the "big yellow chick" is an English White coturnix

Going to be bringing Coturnix and Button quail hatching eggs with me to New Castle tonight, hope to see you all there!
