I have a broody question for all the old broody hen folks. Had a blue asil hen set on some eggs. They hatched and I swooped up the chicks and put in a brooder. The hen went right back to setting on her old nest. After day two I stuck a handfull of eggs that I had collected waiting for a broody hen under her. She has set them for 3 days now. Do you think she will go 2 full settings, or should I switch out under the next broody.

I agree with the others in that the hen will most likely stay broody and hatch another bunch of eggs for you. My broodies will set as long as there are eggs around. I'd say she's good to go.


bfrancis - it was nice visiting with you at the auction the other night and learning about your quail licensure. That is way cool! Your bunnies are adorable, especially the newborns. Well, maybe not yet, but they will be.

Kass - I hope you get some good feedback on your photos. You might want to try measuring the space between each chick's pubic bones. They are located just below the vent. Narrow space = male, larger space = female. If you've got one of each sex you're positive about, you can use his or her pubic bone space as a guide to compare and contrast with your other chicks. You can easily locate the pubic bones by pressing just below the vent with your index finger. This is not a foolproof method to determine sex, but it can be helpful.

cowboy I am resetting my hens this year and have not had any problems. As long as they are in good shape and you keep feed and water for them they usually do good.
Oh yeah, my two frillbacks are hens,I got 4 eggs in their nest!

Joe that silver laced hen is really a beautiful bird! Looks and sounds like you are doing a lot of hatching and selling this year. Be glad when I get back ther so we can buddy-up at the sales.

Spent the day in the Dr.s offices,wife had a byopsy done on her thryoid today.Hopeing for good results. She is job hunting again and I hoped she might concider going back and looking there but she is determined to stay here till she retires. Just hope she finds work before she retires!lol

I have to give myself insulin shots in the stomach each evening. Doc said one inch either side of the navel...not above or below the navel. Have very few bruises and feel less pain....using a 31 gauge 5/16 inch needle.

Aaawww, she wants babies to take care of! I had them for 2 wks and they were isolated with just my Dark Brahmas and my Ameraucana babies. I'm 99.9% sure the babies don't have a thing that'll get anyone sick. The adults might be carriers of something the babies could get though. If possible I'd keep them on medicated chick starter because if they're out with adults (if you let her have em') they'll need it to ward off coccidia. Take a soggy piece of bread out to them and show it to them lol They'll take your fingers off for bread!

Mitzi I was never worried about the babies bringing something in. I was concerned about the big one making them sick. Especially with the stress of moving. I think I am going to let the hen have the babies though because I found her trying to sleep next to their pen when I went to bring them in. Poor thing.

I about cried. So I am going to put her and them in the nursery pen tomorrow. They will still be separate from the main flock and the other babies for their protection. Then I can move them over with the other momma hen and her adopted babies in time.

Hey guys just wondering if you would send good vibes to my husband's uncle. He just found out he has stage 4 cancer of the liver. His liver was fine 7 months ago, totally clean so it's moving really fast. He's opted to just let it go instead of trying chemo. So just looking for good thoughts and prayers that he is able to get all of his affairs in order and pass in as little pain as possible. His name is Sherman and he really is just an awesome and wonderful guy. His health went downhill after his wife died about two years ago. He had to have his bladder removed and just lots of other troubles, but we all thought things were getting better. So sad he really is a great guy.

I am so sorry for your family. I am sending prayers your way.

where did you get these ladies? My wife wants some white Cochins, preferably LF's.

Glad you like them. Bo Garrett brought several colors of Cochins to the New Castle auction several weeks ago. There were 8 white hens, but hubby and I had to leave before the chickens sold. Several BYCers bought some of Bo's birds and I was able to purchase these two lovely ladies from Michael Daugherty.

We are trapping crawfish in a minnow trap using hot links. Roger pulled the trap early this afternoon and set them in buckets of fresh water to flush their systems. The mudbugs are 3 - 5 inches long. Looks like it will be a good spring for them...put back several females covered with eggs. Will be enough this year to even freeze some. They burrow up when the water temps reach 85 - 90 degrees. The bull frogs in the ponds are huge this year too.

I was giving you a hard time, thought maybe you meant big needles for my big belly

I take insulin shots too. 2 pills morning and night and shots when needed. Yes the needle is much larger than the insulin shots. Have you ever used the leg for the shots. When my belly gets sore, I switch to thigh. My doc said either would work.
