***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well shoot. They act fine, they eat like crazy. Their crops are always full. I thought maybe they weren't feathering out because they're still under 90* heat. It's at 88 right now and they're asleep so maybe I'm getting somewhere. I wouldn't dream of having you replace them! It's not your fault at all. And beside I'm already attached to these ones lol Actually the one that died was my favorite, it waddled like a little penguin. One of my Silver Phoenix I got that same night died also. And those 4 had always done well.

Ksane - sorry about your chickie losses. I lost one last week too, a one-week old black & white Serama baby. Don't know why it died. My DD was chicken sitting for me last week and when she came to check on the birds she found that one dead. It was my favorite from that hatch. It seems that our favorites are usually the ones we lose. So sad.

Edited to say that I hope your hen gets a good report from the vet clinic tomorrow. I won't have access to internet tomorrow (traveling) so sending her luck tonight.

Took some pics, changed the batteries in the middle of taking pics & didn't reset the date-- all pics were from today. The EE eggs from the auction should all come from these 2 roos, if you happen to have a NN appear LMK & I will replace them with an EE if you don't want the NN. (I have a NN cockeral that free ranges with them & I have noticed he is starting to chase the ladies a tad bit). I am also including some pics of EE pullets that have hatched from my eggs.

I'm so glad you posted them. I was going to look back on the raffle list post to see who they came from. I'm really excited about it.

Those boys are pretty handsome too. What do you call the color patterns on them? And I like the girls too. Before the neighbors dog ate most of the chickens we started with there were two that looked similar to the last one and I was so mad when they disappeared. I really like the soft gray color on the lighter ones too.

An NN? Hmmm... Not sure about that *lol* I keep staring at the pics everyone posts and haven't made up my mind about how I feel. They certainly are different! DH says they look like turkey vultures to him. eewwww.... but I don't think so. I'll just wait and see what we get and then figure it out if we happen to get one.

If you can get past their looks, (the chicks are adorable BTW), they are super birds. If I had an egg flock I would have lots of them (and Ameraucanas - I admire Kass's flock plans). They are healthy, smart, good free rangers, good layers and meat birds and handle OK weather well. - sounds like I have some! - Of all the breeds I hear folks talk about raising I notice that NN owners are very happy with their birds.

Yall are cracking me up tonight! Got home in time to check all my feather babies before it got entirely dark. Then came in to check hatchers. One little Banty cochin of Jacks has hatched and wobbling around. It is the only one out of the batch I think got baked in the incubator when it spiked to 110. So I am surprised anything hatched! Then in the small redwood we had a little blue EE chick peeping loudly about being an only child. I have 3-4 more working on hatching in there and hatch day is still not until the 9th. All my dark, dark cuckoo maran eggs from the blanchard auction are duds. We took all but 4 out of two dozen out. I really pray we get 2 of those 4 to hatch.

Mitzi, sorry to hear about your chick loss. We lost one last week, they were all fine and then later that morning one was dead. It was a wheaten marans we bought down south to go with the 3 we got from Tulsa. I think some chicks are just not as thrifty as others. If you feel the need for more banty cochins holler Jack's eggs are hatching like crazy.

Les, I think I've got one of those late stage quitters right now. It looks like fluid in there and the non-moving baby just floats around. Is that a pretty clear indication it died? I'd hate to take a live one out :-(

Sorry, had to go out and shave a dog. Anyone need a bushel of well used dog hair?

Many times in the later stages you don't see movement nearly as much as in the first week to two weeks. What I look for are those big, fat, bright red blood veins. If there is not a big spiderweb of veins chances are the chick is dead. Veins that are not viable will look brown and good veins will look pink or red. I will get some pics of good eggs tomorrow and post them.

Nektosha the lighter color girls are my favorite. The first roo is Fat Louie, he is a blue wheaten & is the first chick DD ever hatched. He will live a LONG life here if she has anything to say about it. The 2nd roo she bought off Michael at an auction, because Michael is the kinda guy that could never tell a girl she already has enough roos. I don't know that there are names for the other colors since they are considered to be mutts, but they lay pretty eggs & that is all that matters. I have yet to figure out who lays blue eggs & who lays green, but in the box I think we put 6 blue & 6 green so maybe you will end up with girls that lay both.
The NN boy is pretty young & fat Louie keeps his girls pretty covered (they are bald & missing all the feathers on their back). If you do end up with a NN by chance I will be happy to get you some replacement chicks or eggs. The poor NN tries hard to chase those girls but Fat Louie always steps in quickly. (Fat Louie was Fat Louise until he was 5 months old & began to crow). He is an awesome rooster He treats his girls well & escorts them all over the farm. Some of my other roos are not as courteous.
