***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Sorry to hear about your red goldens...were they chicks or adults?

I've got some cooking right now and a bunch of yellow goldens...hope they do well. We'll find out next week.

Had a hen today who had part of a green eggshell she was trying hard to pass. I saw her try multiple times. No luck. Soaked her in the tub then she pushed real hard & the shell was hanging outside for 10 min or so still connected. She pushed again & the shell was sucked back up inside her. I covered her up with a towel & the next time she pushed I was able to grab ahold of the shell. It was still connected to her so I didn't want to pull it loose. DH sanitized a pr of scissors & cut at the top of the shell. She a tiny bit of the shell still is attached but now she seems to be doing much better. It was only the shell we cut, I am not sure if she will make it or not. She is in a cage now eating & pacing back & forth wanting out. She is much more comfortable & not pushing now. The part we removed was a out the size & thickness of a quarter. Poor girl had been in distress since @ least 2 this afternoon. Possibly longer.

Well home and moved chicks around, tried moving the guinea keets to their own little brooder outside and they were going bonkers in it trying to get to the brooder on the other side of them. It is divided with plywood but I guess they could hear the chicks they had been brooding with before and wanted in with them. I thought they were going to hurt themselves jumping up and hitting the top of the brooder trying to get to the other side. So I just moved them in with the chicks and they are now happy as could be. Guess they will just eat chick starter instead of gamebird starter, lol.

We ended up with 30 chicks hatching this week but culled the one that the yolk didn't absorb before hatching. Carl I think dh would faint if we hatched that many chicks in one week, lol.

[Nana] That that was good in the news paper about the dedication, i know that must have made you proud of your Mother agin

Been talking with ladyokie (Shellie) and sharing a story that she thought I should post...

Last week during our peafowl hatch, the power company had to do maintenance and had our rural power off for 14 hours! anyway, out of 4 eggs, 3 pipped...2 of those shrink wrapped and passed but had a single peachick hatch.

well, a single peachick is the loudest, looniest thing you can imagine...so first I put a sock in with it...like a teddy bear...that worked for about 5 seconds...so as I was looking around to see what might help, got an idea! A peacock is nothing more than an overgrown pheasant right? Well, I just happen to have some pheasant chicks and put one with the peachick..at first it wasn't a good match, but after a week they are fast friends!

The next batch of peachicks are due to hatch in a couple weeks so it will be back with its own kind...but until then, here are the pics

Quote: Thank you for the input. I was thinking I'd like to free range them, but as you mentioned, I'd like for them to stay around. I'll probably start with some young ones and keep them in the coop w/ the chickens until they're big enough to go it alone outside the pen. That way, hopefully they'll imprint where home is. It will be a few weeks before I get any. I want to get the chicken pen finished and decide what colors to get. I've always wanted guineas. I think they're cool birds, and love to hear them chatter.

ours get along with the other birds, but get chased by the geese- they freerange and share the layer feed and seem to do fine- they love scratch too

i usually give them a warm bath and massage, and tums in the drinking water, and keep them in a crate at nite to keep them quiet...
